Kentucky Wildcats 5 for Friday: Mark down March 1 as "Jorts Day?"
By Paul Jordan
I have to admit I am torn. I am definitely not a big fan of jorts — the fashion plague, but I am a big fan of Jorts — the man. So what the hell? UK’s Senior Day will be on March 1 and Kentucky has just one senior busting through a paper hoop, none other than Josh “Jorts” Harrellson, so lets go all out an honor him.
There is an online petition now asking Lexington mayor Jim Gray to officially declare March 1 as “Jorts Day in Lexington to honor Harrellsons last day. Apparently the idea has caught on with Lexington retailers who are posting signs counting down until “Jorts Day” and among the UK student population who are planning to wear Jorts to the game.
So go for it, Jim Gray. Maybe it will make us forget your horrible idea to “renovate Rupp”. … For a day.
Could Randall Cobb be drafted by the Baltimore Ravens in the first round? ESPN’s Todd McShay seems to think so and has placed Cobb as the 26th pick in the latest NFL mock draft. Such a situation would be idea for Cobb, who would land on a sold team, with a solid QB, on a team needing that one extra playmaker to make a serious Super Bowl run. Reports are also circulating that Derrick Locke could find himself going in the first three rounds as well. Todd McShay talks about how both players are “jumping out on film”.
Keeping on a draft theme, can Terrence Jones passing (or lack of passing) affect his NBA draft status? There is an ESPN insider article that suggests that NBA teams may be wary about using a high draft pick on “just a scorer” and offers the following stats:
"Looking back on the recruitment of Terrence Jones (PER of 27.96, third-best in the SEC), coach John Calipari has said he liked the 6-8 forward’s passing ability. Unfortunately, Kentucky is halfway through the SEC slate, and Jones has yet to showing his passing skills. Counting the Wildcats’ win over Tennessee on Tuesday night, Jones has amassed just 10 assists in conference play. His assist ratio, 7.9 percent, is the third-lowest ratio for any player with a usage rate of 25 percent or higher. (NIU’s Xavier Silas and USM’s Gary Flowers are the other two in the top 100 with similar statistical profiles.) And don’t expect Jones to dump the ball down to Eloy Vargas or find DeAndre Liggins on the wing — in 10 games, they have yet to receive a pass from Jones that has led to a bucket. So who are the most frequent recipients? Brandon Knight and Doron Lamb account for a combined 60 percent of Jones’ assists."
Could Billy Donovan and the Florida Gators be feeling Kentucky’s pain this year? Seems an ESPN insiders blog is calling Florida freshman Patric Young the “next Daniel Orton:
"Florida freshman Patric Young is averaging just 3.4 points and 3.3 rebounds in his first season in Gainesville, but according to David Thorpe, “… while Patric Young has pedestrian averages and could improve his draft stock in 2012 by returning to Florida, he will have teams lining up to draft him this spring, possibly at the end of the lottery.”"
The new NCAA Tournament announcement about every single game being available on cable television is huge news for Wildcat fans out of state. Gone is the angst of waiting all day to see the Cats only to see them take a quick 10 point lead and then get bumped for a game that you care nothing about. Under the new broadcast terms, every single game of the tourney will be broadcast, and will have staggered start times. So instead of three games ending at once, you will be able to catch the ending of each game as well. Pure genius and long, long overdue.
