UK Basketball: So Now Who Do You Want To Blame?

You think Darius liked what happened at Ol’ Miss?

I have listened to the constant bemoaning of the Cats (and specifically Darius Miller’s) performance at Ol’ Miss since Tuesday evening and I have to say that I am really disappointed in you, my fellow members of the Big Blue Nation. Not because you have concerns about Darius passing up an open 3, because that is just an error. The kid made a mistake, he knew he made it, and he will not let it happen again. But my concern is how the BBN is allowing itself to wallow in this “woe is me” attitude, self-doubt and gloom and doom predicting after a one basket loss to an SEC opponent on the road in February. Some of the comments include,

“I saw this coming a mile away”, and “I guess this is what we get for bringing Calipari the huckster to town”, or my personal favorite, “There goes this season”.

What a bunch of namby pamby, fair weather, holier than thou, spoiled brats we are. We get three number one recruiting classes back to back to back, go back to the Elite Eight in Calipari’s first year, lose a lynch pin to the entire team to NCAA stupidity, which forces us to play with a short bench, and we lose a game at Mississippi (which we had beaten about 11-12 times straight, they had to win one eventually), and the entire BBN starts playing Chicken Little to the world??

These kids deserve better than that. Coach Cal deserves better than that. And doggone it the rest of the BBN deserves better than that. Are we supposed to be immune to losing? Did everyone forget we had three freshman starters this year? Are we so arrogant that we think that because we are the greatest program in the history of the game that we can’t be beaten on any given night? There is a word for that, it’s called hubris. And for as much as I understand the giant egos of us as a fanbase well, I do not understand the seething ugliness that we are showing in giving up on the current season and roster.

If everyone wants to quit hitting the Chicken Switch, take a deep breath, and let go of a little of that panic attack they are embarking on, they could see this for what it really is. A loss. No more, no less, just a loss on an away game in the SEC regular season. We have sportswriters who are willing to consider Tennessee as the first place team in the SEC East just a couple of days ago, and they couldn’t even beat teams this year who couldn’t get into the SEC with an invitation from Mike Slive himself.

This is not about this team, it’s coach, or it’s abilities, because those are not in question. We have good kids, a good coach, and a good program. This is about our hubris. And what we need to learn from ourselves. We are Kentucky, we are better than this. And it is about time we showed it.
