Kentucky Wildcat's 5 for Monday: Is Marquis Teague more explosive than Kyrie Irving?
By Paul Jordan
No doubt about it, Marquis Teague is one of the top players in the 2012 recruiting class, but what can Kentucky Wildcat fans expect when he actually takes the floor? Rival, com’ Jerry Meyers dipped into his mailbag recently and answered that particular question. Meyers was asked to compare Teague and Dukes’s PG Kyrie Irving and here is what he had to say:
"Both players are elite point guard prospects. They are similar in that they are high-level ball handlers who are extremely elusive with the basketball. They are both adept at making plays off the dribble. They are dangerous defenders with their anticipatory skills and quick hands and feet. There are slight differences between the two. I’d give Irving the edge as a scorer off the dribble. Teague has an edge as being a little more of an explosive athlete. Irving has an edge in terms of intangibles and leadership skills. Teague is a little quicker. In fact, Teague might be the quickest player side to side with the basketball that I’ve ever scouted. In general, Irving is the more polished and refined of the two players. Teague, however, is the more explosively athletic player."
Also, check out the same article and Meyers states that he thinks that Teague and Anthony Davis will finish number two and three in the 2011 class, behind Austin Rivers.
In case you missed it, our very own Tyler Cox had an interview with Perry Ellis, one of the top targets in the 2012 class. It appears that Perry had a pretty big weekend as well as he was named the MVP of the McPherson Invitational. Ellis’s Wichita Heights team defeated McPherson 81-73 in a battle of two of Kansas’s top HS teams. Perry had 23 points and 9 rebounds but most importantly, he had this quote which should whet the appetite of Wildcat fans:
"“I wish I could break (the MVP award) into five pieces. If I didn’t have them I wouldn’t even have been an MVP.”"
John Wall may be gone from the Bluegrass, but he certainly is not forgotten from the hearts and minds of Kentucky’s sportswriters. John Wall was names as the Kentucky Sportsman of the Year. In doing so, he prevented his former coach, John calipari from repeating the honor. Wall finished first with 369 points. Randall Cobb finished second with 276 points and he edged John Calipari, who had 271. UK Hoops star Victoria Dunlap finished fourth, ahead of Kentucky Derby jockey Calvin Borel.
Speaking of Victoria Dunlap, she had a big game yesterday with 19 points and 9 rebounds to lead the UK Hoops team to a 78-68 win over Vanderbilt. The 19th ranked Wildcats used a 20-0 first half streak to break the game open and the Hoops team improved to 15-4 on the year and 4-2 in the SEC. A’dia Mathies (above) had 7 points, 5 assists, and 4 rebounds. UK Hoops plays at Ole Miss next on Thursday night.
Former Kentucky punter Tim Masthay has a very good chance to become the next Wildcat with a Super Bowl ring. And if the Packers do win the Super Bowl, Masthay certainly earned his ring as most pundits think that Masthay’s performance yesterday against the Bears was the key to the Packers win.
