Kentucky Wildcat's 5 for Tuesday: John Calipari – Financial Advisor?

facebooktwitterreddit

Kentucky Wildcat basketball coach John Calipari has been called many things, but financial advisor has not been one of them.  During a town hall on Friday, Calipari seemed to take on that role with great relish and for a change, gets some good press for doing what is right for his players:

"At one point in the town hall the conversation turned to personal finances for the players and Coach Cal seems to feel an obligation to try to teach the players about some basics of how to handle their money. He says that the first $1 million should go into the bank and not be touched. After that you take care of whoever needs to be taken care of (family-wise). Back to that first million, he said if you leave it alone, then in seven years you have $2 million. He then went on to say that with that $2 million you can live on $200,000 without ever touching the principal. First I think he is to be commended for being aware of these issues and trying to pass along awareness to his players."

For some reason, someone dusted off 76 year old former Arizona coach Lute Olson and for some reason, he used the attention to lash out at Kentucky coach John Calipari:

"He defended his former protégé, Memphis coach Josh Pastner. “He needs to get his type of kids, the kind of kids he wants in the program to fit his style of play and coaching,” Olson said of Pastner, who played and coached under him. “I also thought it was unprofessional of John Calipari to take all those kids out of there to Kentucky. Very unprofessional.”"

I wonder what Lute would say about a coach that reneged on promises to promote his assistants twice in a year.  Oh wait, he did that at Arizona …. Unprofessional, Lute, unprofessional.

“SHOOOOOOOTTTTTTTT”.  OK Rupp Arena, listen up.  Jarrod Polson thinks its getting kind of old  when you yell this everytime he touches that ball at midcourt.  I tend to agree.  I know Kentucky fans have had a long standing obsession/love affair with the walk-ons, but for this season at least, Polson is a scholarship player and he is as Calipari says, probably the most talented “walk on” player he has ever seen.  I know we want to see Polson succeed, but let’s be realistic.  The kids not a novelty anymore …. he’s no Steven Masiello.

No one knows whether Terrence Jones will start tonights game or if he will come off the bench for the third straight game but one thing is obvious.  John Calipari wants Terrence Jones to pass the ball more:

“I told his (UK) teammates, when I watched him in high school, what impressed me most about Terrence Jones wasn’t his shooting.  Wasn’t his rebounding because he didn’t always go for the ball. It was his passing. Unbelievable passer. We’re just not seeing that right now……It’s kind of like Brandon (Knight), We need you to run our team and pass the ball, but I need you to score some baskets, too.”

The Wildcats have a tough game in Tuscaloosa tonight as they face the Alabama Crimson Tide.  It should be a defensive battle as the Tide is a very stingy team but they also struggle to score points, hence the 10-7 record.  Don’t underestimate the Tide though as this series is historically close and Kentucky has just a 28-21 advantage in Tuscaloosa.  Click to see my preview for this game and click here to see what John Calipari, Terrence Jones, and Jorts have to say about the Alabama matchup.  Corey Price will have his always popular “Inside the Numbers” post up on the site at noon, so make sure you check that out.
