8 Hours as a UK Coach Potato: Fail

So last night I fell asleep watching the LSU and Texas A&M game in hopes to get up early for a good day of Kentucky sports. It’s sort of a tradition for me on Kentucky game day, basketball or football to tune into the post game or pre-game. I love hearing Oscar Combs dissect the upcoming game and I love hearing the pre-game chats with the coaches. What was even better, I was supposed to go to Lexington all day on business but we got a ton of snow, SO I got to stay in my apartment at college all day and just sit down and watch the bowl game and basketball game, sounds really fun right?

False, it turned out to be the worst weekend in my life that I can remember.

I mean let’s face it, I knew that the football game would be a close game and could go either way with, by game time, Pittsburgh was 4 point favorites. I also knew that Kentucky basketball had one heck of a fight on their hands with the Georgia Bulldogs what I didn’t think would happen was that UK would go 0-2 on the day leaving my happiness level on about a negative 40.

It was so bad, that I actually started to take some notes on the game, like you know funny little comments in-between games and what not (Like I’m funny or witty right?). Here are my notes:

10:00: Got up and started listening to pre-game, I predict UK to win in a close one though, hopefully Oscar Combs agrees.

12:10: LEGGGGOOOOOOOOO

That’s it.

That’s all of my notes just because by the time I went back to type more notes the game was already eye-bleedingly (probably not a real word but the only way to describe how horrible it was) boring and not only that but the only thing exciting was when UK showed more fight than they have all season, minus the South Carolina game and actually pushed and shoved the other team back.

First let me start out ranting at the football team. Before I go on I will say that even though most of my posts are about basketball, I am a football season holder of two years and I enjoy Saturday’s in Lexington, it is always the highlight of my weekend. What I want to know is HOW do you get WORSE when you have a week’s worth of practice under your belt? I believe the UK football squad had 15 practices or so under their belt before the Pittsburgh game. A Pittsburgh team none the less that would have had to be creating plays on the ground with a stick.

Seriously, you have a month’s worth of practice against a team who doesn’t have a head coach and then gets a head coach and then he gets fired and you get EMBARASSED. I don’t like throwing players under the bus but I really miss Mike Hartline. It was like the o-line didn’t even want to protect for Morgan Newton and every single pass he made he left hanging.

I thought with Rick Minter our defense may see a bit of change but boy was I wrong, the running game of Pittsburgh did whatever they want when they wanted and if Winston Guy goes pro them I swear I’m going to declare for the draft tomorrow.

I’m done with football for a while and I’m sure I’ll renew my football season tickets when the time comes but right now I just need to sit back and take it all in that this may have been the last time I would see Randall Cobb in a Kentucky uniform, plus he broke Darren McFadden’s total yardage for all purpose yards. I would not be upset if Cobb went pro, he has done all he could for UK and went out and put his body on the line each and every time he went out there on the field.

Now onto basketball.

I knew that the Georgia game was going to be tough and this game sort of had that feeling to it as soon as Kentucky got down six points to start the game, but I honestly wasn’t worried until the three minute mark because I thought Kentucky was playing very poised.

Despite Kentucky playing fairly poised throughout the game they could not score and hats off to Georgia because they brought it today with a sold out house. On Kentucky’s worst defensive effort of the year they exploited it to precision. When Kentucky went to the 3-2 zone and Georgia got back to back dunks it was a telling sign of the whole game.

I think the call that broke Kentucky was the blown call on Doron Lamb when he drove the lane and just got hammered going up for a layup and they no called it only to call some tick-tack foul on Terrence Jones 24 feet from the basket causing him to sit with his fifth foul. I’m not one to blame referees and Kentucky still should have played through it but that was a huge momentum shift in the Dawgs favor.

I honestly don’t have an answer to why UK played so poorly, I don’t think the Kanter decision would have effected them that much since Kanter never really suited up for Kentucky, but on the other hand there may not be an excuse, Georgia really brought the pressure offensively and defensively.

Overall, a really bad weekend and here I thought this post was going to be witty and funny and full of poking funs against Georgia fans and Pittsburgh fans, then we drop our bowl game and our season SEC opener…So much for that.

By the way Auburn only had six points against LSU tonight in the whole first half, random I know but we do play Auburn in basketball Tuesday that should be really fun!
