Kentucky Wildcats 5 for Tuesday: Calipari does not sound optimistic about Kanter playing this season edition
By Paul Jordan
All Kentucky Wildcat fans want for Christmas is their Enes Kanter in the lineup, but sadly it appears that John Calipari is not that optimistic about that happening this season. A caller into John Calipari’s show last night raised the question as to whether Cal had a good vibe on the Enes situation and Cal was not that optimistic in his response:
"“You can keep hoping and praying,” he told the caller, “but, you know, it’s in the NCAA’s hands. If they choose not to let him play, he will not play.”"
Calipari went on to say that Kanter may sit out all season and then play in 2011-2012. Of course after this season, Calipari will have to deal wiwth the possibility Kanter heads to the NBA where he is already projected as a high lottery pick.
There is also a good bit of scuttlebutt and speculation that if he is declared ineligible, the Kanter family may sue the NCAA, thus granting a temporary injunction in which Kanter could play immediately. There really is about 20 bad possible outcomes for this in my reason and to be honest, I can’t think of a good reason for this happening. For a lawsuit to be successful, it will need to be proved that the NCAA intentionally violated one of their own rules in determining Kanter ineligible. And that does not seem likely. Don’t get me wrong. I’d love to see the big man on the court ASAP but the thought of him playing under an injunction seems a bad idea and seems to increase the possibility of possible vacated wins later.
As for now, it seems that we have to trust in the refrain of Viva La Jorts.
As most of you know, SEC basketball and the Florida Gators took another black eye yesterday as they lost to Jacksonville at home which was yet another example of SEC schools losing to other teams that are considered well, beneath them. But before that game, Gator Chandler Parsons shared his thoughts on ESPN about the SEC and the subject of the Kentucky Wildcats came up. This was an ESPN insider article, but all we care about is what Parsons had to say about the Cats, right?:
"I think Kentucky’s freshmen have been terrific. Terrence Jones got a lot of hype and he deserves all of it. [DeAndre] Liggins, [Josh] Harrellson, [Darius] Miller — all of the guys other than their freshmen — are really stepping up and playing well this year. John Wall is a rare breed, you’re not gonna find another one of him; he’s one of the best players I’ve ever played against. But I also played against Brandon Knight in high school and he’s also a tremendous talent. Doron Lamb, he really shoots the ball well. They’re special — they make you do a lot of things differently. As a point guard in the SEC playing for Kentucky and starring as a freshman, having the season those guys are having, it just shows you how good those guys really are. I think Brandon shoots the ball a little better [than Wall]. He’s a really smart player and I think he understands shot selection a lot better. If you’re looking at [John] Calipari’s guards — Derrick Rose, Tyreke Evans, John Wall — Knight should be right there with those guys. He’s special."
Yes, DeAndre Daniels will be deciding on his school soon. He pretty much has to decide soon if he wants to enroll in January, right? Anyway, speculation is that this has become a UK vs KU decision with Texas, Oregon, and Florida possibly thrown in. Word is that Michael Gilchrist spent some time with Daniels at the City of Palms Classic taking up the Big Blue Nation. Time will tell …
Finally, a bit of good news for the football Wildcats as DT Mister Cobble is eligible to play in the bowl game. Cobble was well hyped before this season and he has the size and speed to make an impact, so let’s hope he lives up to the hype. You have to love his name and you have to love his quote about how he worked hard and made himself eligible:
"“I didn’t procrastinate, I didn’t chase girls. I stayed in my room, read my books, and answered the phone when mama called.”"
