Could Kentucky be poised for more 2011 recruiting thunder with DeAndre Daniels and Trevor Lacey?
By Paul Jordan
As long as John Calipari is at the University of Kentucky, he is going to produce stellar recruiting classes. He has already produced three consecutive number one recruiting classes and it appears that Calipari may be able to add a jewel or two to his 2011 class. As of now, Kentucky has eleven scholarship players, two under the limit. Consider the fact that Josh Harrellson will be graduating and that Jarrod Polson will more than likely be a traditional walkon with no scholarship next season and that opens four scholarships for next season.
Enter Davis, Knight, Gilchrist, and Wiltjer. And it would seem that once again that we have a full order of scholarships. The reality that Enes Kanter may never suit up for Kentucky opens up one scholarship next year. And when you factor in the odds there may be a NBA defector, another spot could open up for 2011.
And as fate would have it, a couple of the biggest 2011 names remaining are starting to make quite a buzz. The big question is not if Kentucky can land one of them, but can the Cats land both of them?
The DeAndre Daniels saga is starting to turn into a “will he or won’t he” soap opera. First he commits to Texas, and then de-commits. Then he flirts with re-classifying into the 2010 class and a Kentucky commitment seemed imminent. Then he decided to stay in the 2011 class and it seemed Kentucky cooled on him. Then Kansas and Oregon seemed to take the lead for Daniels. Then all of a sudden, Daniels decides he wants to enroll in school and January and play ball. And Kentucky crept back into the discussion. Then he decided that he would enroll in school early and not play ball. DeAndre visited Kentucky again. Then North Carolina crept into the picture. And exited the picture. And now his former school Texas is getting a turn.
Whew.
Well, the clock is clicking on this commitment and you figure we will hear something soon. I know a Kentucky website was reporting they thought Daniels would choose Kentucky, but Kansas, Oregon, and Texas websites have been reporting the same for their schools as well. If you play the odds, someone will be right eventually.
Alabama sharpshooter Trevor Lacey has been on Calipari’s radar for quite sometime as well and now the buzz is getting hot that Lacey is getting close to making a decision. It’s no secret that Kentucky is high on him and some believe that he may be a bigger target than Daniels. Lacey has had a couple of 50 point games this season which has whetted the UK fan’s appetite. Kentucky is facing pretty tough competition from Auburn and Alabama and there is a lot of pressure for Lacey to stay in the state of Alabama as most of the home grown talent has been going elsewhere. Here is a little video on Lacey so you can get to know him a bit better:
