This is it. You didn’t deliver me Layla Kiffin last year, you didn’t get me the win against UT this year; if this keeps up I will forced to admit that you don’t exist. Therefore I am now making this an easy list to fulfill, and hopefully you can help me out here. This is no expensive, materialistic list, this is a list of things I want to see in the empire of Bluegrass Athletics for the BBVACCAVBB bowl. It would be in your best interest to put a little effort into reading this. Otherwise the Flying Spaghetti Monster may have some words for you.
1. The QB of the future to show up going into the next year– After Hartline went all Chris Brown (note: a friend commented upon hearing the charges,” Mike Hartline attempted to hit a girl, but it landed two yards short of its intended target”. Golden) this weekend, I immediately began thinking about the backup situation. All year we have been hearing about the QB2-B designation on the two former blue-chippers we have toting clipboards on the sideline and Joker has been avoiding the question; now is the time to finally get an answer. You’re not going to get a better look at who is ready now, if you haven’t made up your mind yet you might not be able to ever (also a possibility). It will be interesting to see who lines up for the opening snap because that will give an indication of who Joker thinks has more potential for next year; if Mossakowski is really as good as we’ve heard then maybe a a more accurate, less mobile dropback passer is a better fit for the future (see also Andre Woodson). I’m not bailing on Morgan Newton who, unlike Mozz (hope you like the nickname Ryan!), has SEC victories under his belt and popular fan support. Bottom line, if either one stumbles out f the gate as the starter be on the lookout for a potential benching/ ignited QB controversy.
2. A young leader to show up on both sides of the ball– The panic over Randall Cobb and Danny Trevathan aside, they will both be seniors next year and heading for the NFL anyway, we need another Skywalker. Players like them do not show up often, but a mark of a great program is having impact players emerge as veterans graduate. La’Rod King is showing up as a playmaker for the future, but the defense is still looking for an identity and it’s hard to see where it’s going to come from. My line of thinking is that if you don’t have the system (or even tackling) down by your junior season, then you might not ever get it, and Winston Guy hasn’t gotten it. Mychal Bailey seems to be working on it, but he’s going to have to make a hell of a leap if he’s going to be a team leader next year. Neither are young, but I’m looking everywhere for signs of leadership on that side of the ball. Qua Huzzie has some potential but the bite-sized ‘backer is averaging less than one solo tackle per game in the eight he played this season. We need this one more than the first wish despite the press that a QB battle will garner.
3. An early Nuclear Minter– I didn’t think we could have landed Randy Shannon, especially at a co-coordinator position, but Rick Minter brings a lot of experience to this staff and that’s what we need. My wish is that the Nuclear Minter (my new favorite nickname in UK coaching) has already arrived and is contributing, which would be cause for all this snow and hopefully a slight uptick in our D going into the bowl game. All accounts say he is a passionate old-schooler with a great skill for connecting and teaching, and those would be all the things that Steve Brown is lacking. Let’s hope the Minter weather continues.
So Santa, I don’t think I’m being unreasonable, you gave Chizik a get out of jail free card on Newton, and that was blatantly illegal. Don’t be stupid Santa, those noodly appendages don’t mess around.
Hugs and Kisses,
Zach
