Kentucky Wildcats 5 for Friday: Mike Hartline arrested edition

facebooktwitterreddit

I absolutely hate having to write about things like this but Kentucky Wildcat quarterback Mike Hartline was arrested early this morning.  I’m not going to add any conjecture right now, so let’s just go with what is being reported:

"Police say they were called out to a duplex along Cresent Avenue around 3 a.m. for a report of an active disturbance. When officers arrived, they found a group of people outside involved in a verbal altercation.Police arrested Hartline, 22, and charged him with disorderly conduct and alcohol intoxication"

And after that news, I feel obligated to give you some news that will make you smile, so here goes.   It seems that a reporter for the Indiana Student Daily is taking John Calipari to task for his recruiting “one and dones” and seems to think that Tom Crean’s recruiting strategy will yield a national title before Kentucky:

"So when Kentucky plays Saturday against IU, the Wildcats’ talent will more than likely shine through. But in the long term, the top-heavy talent strategy will catch up to Calipari.Despite the revolving door of talent at Kentucky, IU may have a better chance to celebrate a national title first."

So it is a heavy handed logic, but the author is saying that Kentucky will win the battle on Saturday, but the Hoosiers will eventually win the war?

OK, I have been corrected.  The picture above is actually of Indiana coach Tom Crean and the former picture listed is actually of actor Tom Arnold.  It’s a good thing that the WBN has a crack editorial staff that makes corrections quickly so that our readers will not mistake a picture of Tom Arnold for Tom Crean.

But while I am writing here, let me ask you a simple question:  which 2011 recruiting class do you think will yield a national title first?  Tom Crean’s (correct picture above) class of Cody Zeller and Austin Etherington or John Calipari’s class of Anthony Davis, Marquis Teague, Kyle Wiltjer, and Michael Gilchrist?  I will let you think about it, and we will take into consideration that both classes may still add players.

Today’s “5 for Friday” is rapidly turning into a bash on rivals day, which I have no problem with.  It seems that the Louisville Cardinals have finally entered the ESPN Power Rankings at number 24 while dropping Kentucky to number 16 . The Cardinals are the new front page of college basketball coverage darling over at ESPN and it makes you wonder if Kentucky is headed for an ambush on December 31 at the Yum! Center.

True the Cardinals are 7-0 but their biggest win of the season has been over a 4-4 Butler Bulldog team that was mistakenly ranked #18 in the preseason.  Other than that, the Cardinals have wins over Jackson State, Chattanooga, Marshall, FIU, South Alabama and San Francisco.  A whole lot of sugar and not a lot of substance.  Let’s just say I still feel pretty confident about our chances on December 31.

Finally, Kentucky will have a little bit of a rotation change for Saturday’s game against the Indiana Fighting Tom Arnolds.  Seems that after his first career basket, a three pointer in the Notre Dame game, freshman Stacey Poole is moving ahead of Jon Hood in the rotation:

"“Let him get Jon’s minutes, and let’s see if he can do better,” Calipari said. “He deserves an opportunity, too.”"
