Inside The Numbers: Kentucky vs. Washington

facebooktwitterreddit

Tonight at 9:30 p.m. on ESPN, the Kentucky Wildcats, ranked #8 in the latest AP Poll, will be battling against the Washington Huskies, ranked #13 in the latest AP Poll, in the Maui Classic Invitational semifinals. This game will have all the storylines, considering Terrence Jones decommitted from the Huskies prior to signing with our Wildcats. Add the fact that it’s a matchup of 2 top 15 teams and it should be a must-see matchup. Here are some numbers and facts of interest heading into tonight’s game:

Various Records

Kentucky’s all-time record vs. Washington: 1-0 (1.000)

Only meeting: March 14th, 1985 NCAA Tournament West Regional First Round Kentucky – 66 Washington – 58 Special Events Center (Attendance: 7,351) (Kenny Walker had a double-double with 29 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Wildcats, the 12 seed, to an upset over the 5 seed Huskies)

Kentucky’s record vs. schools located in the state of Washington: 4-0 (1.000)

Kentucky’s record vs. schools currently in the Pac 10: 22-10 (.688) (6-4 in the last 10 meetings)

Kentucky’s record in the Maui Classic Invitational: 9-4 (.692) (6-4 in the last 10 meetings)

Kentucky’s record in the Maui Classic Invitational semifinals: 1-3 (.250)

Kentucky’s record in the month of November: 84-21 (.800) (10-0 in the last 10 meetings)

Kentucky’s record playing on November 23rd: 2-0 (1.000)

Kentucky’s record when ranked #8 in the AP Poll: 65-23 (.739) (7-3 in the last 10 meetings)

Kentucky’s record when their opponent is ranked #13 in the AP Poll: 14-4 (.778) (9-1 in the last 10 meetings)

Free Throw Shooting: Should It Be This Hard?

After the Wildcats made 11 of 12 free throws (50%) against Oklahoma in the opening round of the Maui Classic Invitational, they have now made just 35 free throws out of their 65 attempts. Their current free-throw shooting percentage as a team so far this season is a meager 53.8%. Looking back through the records, the worst free-throw shooting team in Kentucky history is the 1939-1940 team, which made 200 of their 337 free-throw attempts, or 59.3%. So this season’s team is on pace to become the worst free-throw shooting team in school history, not something to exactly brag about.

Terrence Jones Is A Beast (Sorry Matt Pilgrim)

Terrence Jones showed why he was one of the most highly touted freshman this season when he stuffed the stat sheet last night against the Sooners with 29 points, 13 rebounds, 4 blocks, 3 assists, and 2 steals. His 29 points are tied with Eric Bledsoe for the 2nd most points scored by a freshman in a single game in school history. The 29 points, and the 12 field goals made, are now both school records for a single game in the Maui Classic Invitational Tournament. The previous record of 27 points and 8 field goals were held by Travis Ford against Ohio State and Arizona, respectively, in the 1993 Maui Classic.

Kentucky Lighting It Up From 3

With the 7 made 3-point field goals that Kentucky made last night against Oklahoma, the team has now made 28 3-point field goals through the team’s first 3 games this season. It is the 2nd most 3-point field goals made through the 1st 3 games of a season in school history, and the most since the 1990-1991 season when the Wildcats made 32 3-point field goals in the 1st 3 games of that season.
