Kentucky Wildcat 5 things for Monday: The New York Times even get the corrections on the Kanter story wrong edition
By Paul Jordan
Well Wildcat fans, the mighty New York Times has finally caved in to the massive uproar from the BBN and issued a retraction on Pete Thamel’s Enes Kanter story. Well … only part of that statement is correct. The Times did issue a correction on the Thamel story, but it is unlikely to make any Wildcat fans happy:
"An article on Oct. 13 about the eligibility questions surrounding the University of Kentucky basketball recruit Enes Kanter, who played for a professional club in Turkey, referred incorrectly in some editions to a quotation from his father, Dr. Mehmet Kanter, that appeared in The Sporting News. When Dr. Kanter said, “he is very smart and academic and loves to study,” he was referring to Enes Kanter’s younger brother, Kerem, not to Enes."
Wow. Of all the half-truths and other questionable things that Thamel has reported on, this is hardly what Kentucky fans expected to hear. This is just another example of the incredible amount of arrogance Wildcat fans are facing with Thamel and the NYT.
We all know that there is a lot of expectations on Darius Miller to step up and be a leader this season. Well it appears that he is taking this seriously as he has bulked up to 230 pounds for the upcoming season. Seems a lot of working with Rock Oliver has made Miller stronger and faster. Miller acknowledges that he will need the extra bulk to battle more for rebounds this upcoming season with no DeMarcus Cousins and Patterson around. We’ll see how much it helps, but it’s great to see that Miller is embracing his new role.
Speaking of embracing new roles, here is former Cat John Wall working his preseason magic in front of lots of empty seats in Washington … yea, I know it’s preseason, but Wall will realize no one else can pull 24K for a scrimmage. Certainly not in the NBA:
We all know that the economy is tough on everyone and we are all doing out best to save money. Former Cat Rajon Rondo is planning to save as much money as he can this year in case there is a lockout. I have to admit, I look at a story like this a couple of ways: 1) it amuses me when people that make $9M a year talk about scrimping and saving and 2) I feel good for Rondo in that he seems to have a good head on his shoulders. I know it seems absurd to some of us that an NBA player is concerned about saving money, but hey, the guy has earned it and he is entitled to his lifestyle. It also shows that Rondo has paid attention to what has happened to former NBA players like Antoine Walker and is determined to not let the same thing happen to him.
Another thing that I took from the story is that it seems pretty certain there is going to be a NBA lockout and it will probably be a lengthy one if players are talking about saving money now …. even though they make statements that an agreement can be reached. Not many people would take kindly to their salaries being cut by 1/3. Just saying.
And finally today, Glenn Logan over at A Sea of Blue has an article on “The Gentle Revenge of Mike Hartline”. Most UK fans did not give Hartline a shot at succeeding this season but he has proved us all wrong and as of this morning, Mike Hartline leads the SEC is passing. It’s been nice to watch Hartline redeem himself this season and hopefully he can have a nice four-five game end to his storybook season.
