Kentucky Wildcat 5 things to know for Wednesday: All Apologies Edition
By Paul Jordan
You can tell it is a somewhat slow Wednesday when apologies are the lead story. First, we have an apology that was never needed and then secondly an apology that is badly needed but will never come.
First off, Randall Cobb apologized for his comments on Twitter to some Kentucky fans. And like the true champion he is, Cobb too full credit for his actions:
"“First off, I just want to start off by saying I made a mistake. I did. I messed up. I take blame for everything I said. I know I was wrong. I was wrong for the fact that I took a small percentage of our fan base and lumped them all as one and made it all whole. That’s not how our fans are. Ninety-nine percent of our fans are great fans."
So can we put an end to Twitter-gate finally? I a;ways thought it was much ado about nothing and Joker is not implementing a ban on Twitter … so let’s take a deep sigh. And the fans that Randall was talking about had better shape up. You have been called out.
And now for the apology that is never going to come. Apparently the Tony Woods watch at Louisville is on. In case you were unaware, Woods is the talented former Wake Forest player who fractured his girlfriends spine in a domestic disagreement. He was booted from Wake Forest and 43 days later is visiting the Ville and is saying he wants to attend Louisville. It’s true that Pitino has not accepted him yet, but having him on campus is kind of saying “I sold my soul to the devil for basketball“
And to be fair, Kentucky was one of about 25 school that inquired about Wood. But Kentucky did not take the step of having him come to campus. I am all for second chances and for a while it looked like John Calipari was going to give Royce White a second chance … yet it appears that Cal has shown remarkable restraint in even entertaining players with questionable background (Lance Stephenson), while Pitino is welcoming them with open arms.
Rick Bozich says Pitino will not make the mistake of having Woods become a Card, but desperate times call for desperate measures. Everything we used to like about Pitino when he was at Kentucky is gone and it’s apparent the man he was when he was at Kentucky does not exist anymore. And for that, Pitino needs to apologize.
Hey everyone. Chris Rainey, he of the “Time to Die” text messages and stalking charges is back at Florida. And while we are on the subject of apologies … don’t expect on one from Urban Meyer. Seems Urban has a three game losing streak and a “Fire Coach Meyer” website popping up which was started by the Gators lunatic fringe to worry about, so Rainey is back. Got to love the Gator apologists that are trying to say that Rainey’s behavior was caused by a concussion but I’m not buying it. When Taylor Wyndham rocked Tim Tebow’s world, we did not see Tebow revert to a drinking, cussing, and womanizing neanderthal. Yea … not buying it.
Remember all the jokes and snide asides we made about Calipari turning Freedom Hall into “Rupp Arena West”? Well apparently it is happening. Supposedly, this is the new floor of Freedom Hall. I know it has to irk the Card fans to no ends even thought they are so proud of their chickenbucket arena, but this pic still makes me smile a smug smile.
And finally today, over at ESPN, Chris Low acknowledges that Kentucky has a shot at winning the SEC East, but that the red zone defense has to improve and that the Georgia game this weekend is an elimination game for the SEC East crown.
