Kentucky Wildcat 5 things to know for Monday: Kanter, Knight getting some preseason respect
By Paul Jordan
The BBN is still waiting to hear the fate of big man Enes Kanter, but several sites are proceeding with their season preview articles and acting as if Kanter would be eligible and listing him in their preseason lists. Sports Illustrated has listed both Kanter and Brandon Knight in their list of the top 16 Impact Freshman.
"Enes Kanter6-11, C, KentuckyThe “Free Enes” movement is sweeping Kentucky, as Wildcats fans are pleading with the NCAA to rule in Kanter’s favor on his amateurism case. It may come down to the word of his former Turkish pro team, Fenerbahce (which alleges he was paid more than $100,000) against the word of Kanter and his parents, who claim he didn’t accept any excessive benefits. The reason UK fans care so much? Kanter’s performance in April’s Nike Hoop Summit (where he scored 34 points and grabbed 13 rebounds against a U.S. all-star team) and his experience in Euroleague have made it clear he’ll be a dominant big man at the college level. And the Wildcats, without him, will have no dominant big man.Brandon Knight6-3, PG, KentuckyBrandon Knight is the second of what could be a long line of elite point guards to play for John Calipari at Kentucky; John Wall ran the show in 2009, and a third five-star floor general, Marquis Teague, arrives in 2011. Knight isn’t a lock to go one-and-done like Wall, but big things are expected of the lanky Floridian, who led UK in scoring (at 25 points per game) with a 5-to-1 assist-to-turnover ratio in an August exhibition tour of Canada."
ESPN is also breaking down the top freshmen and Brandon Knight is listed among the top scorers of the incoming Freshman class. Dave Telep has this news for fans of other SEC teams not named Kentucky.
"Cal’s CollectionIf you are an SEC fan worried about where your favorite team will finish this year, say this out loud with us: Kentucky signed three consensus Top 10 players (Enes Kanter remains ineligible), and John Calipari’s fourth-best recruit, guard Doron Lamb, was Oak Hill Academy’s leading scorer last season. Yikes. Psst, next year’s UK class is just as good."
It’s being called the single greatest player intro at Big Blue Madness of all time. I am still partial to the John Wall Dance, but here is another look at Enes Kanter’s introduction as the “Underkanter”.
Usually every move that the Kentucky basketball playerws make are heavily scrutinized and analyzed. Well, football player Randall Cobb is now apparently on the same level as he had his own “mini-drama” yesterday where he blasted UK fans for their lack of support (empty seats at the South Carolina game) and he railed against the fans who left the game early on Twitter. John Clay has some of the details and a poll on the matter where not shockingly, most fans though that Randall was right.
There has been a lot of talk about Kentucky running the table the rest of the way and their chances of winning the SEC East. John Clay has a look at the remaining schedule for all the SEC East teams for you to analyze this morning.
