NFL Update Week 5: Bills Johnson continues to rack up TD's, Falcons Peters a defensive stud
By Paul Jordan
Stevie Johnson (WR/Buffalo Bills): The Bills continue to flounder against every team in the NFL, but Week 5 was very generous to the former Wildcats wide-out who nabbed two touchdowns during Buffalo’s game against the Jaguars on Sunday. Johnson now has four touchdowns in three games and continues to be a valuable target for quarterback Ryan Fitzgerald. Johnson is quickly becoming Fitzgerald’s favorite option, targeted nine times during the game in which Johnson caught five passes for 46 yards. From a fantasy perspective, Johnson has made a name for himself as a weekly waiver wire addition. In the past three weeks, Johnson has had two weeks of double-digit scoring (12 & 16) with nine points coming during Week 4. The most positive aspect to note is his progression in the right direction after barely playing in his first two seasons in the NFL.
Tim Masthay (P/Green Bay Packers): Masthay was rather busy Sunday afternoon against the Washington Redskins, having to punt six times for a total of 284 yards. Masthay had a 57-yard punt during the 4th quarter—his longest boot of the day—which caused a touchback for the Redskins. If there is one thing Masthay could work on it would be field-position for a Packers team that is currently riddled with a slew of injuries. He can kick the hell out of the ball, but placement and accuracy have yet to develop for the rookie punter.
Myron Pryor (NT/New England Patriots): BYE Week
Corey Peters (DT/Atlanta Falcons): The Falcons are emerging as one of the better teams in the NFC having beaten the Browns 20-10 behind some stellar play on defense. Atlanta’s defensive front continues to do a tremendous job stopping the run, this time allowing just 48-yards on the ground and Peters is a big factor in that stat. Peters had three tackles on the day (one solo) and continues to do a tremendous job up front, outplaying teammate and defensive tackle Peria Jerry. Expect the trend to continue with the Falcons emphasizing the team’s speed and size on the front four.
Wesley Woodyard (LB/Denver Broncos): Woodyard was finally able to get his name in the stat sheet despite the Broncos 31-17 loss to the Ravens Sunday afternoon. The young veteran had three solo tackles on the day, but the Broncos 3-4 defense struggled to contain Baltimore’s running game which racked up 233-yards rushing on 47 total carries. Woodyard and company will have to do a lot better to win some football games down the road.
John Conner (FB/New York Jets): Conner continues to do the dirty work for the Jets and is helping his team become one of the better rushing teams in the NFL. New York racked up 155-yards rushing behind the likes of Conner at the fullback position along with LaDanian Tomlinson and Shonn Greene. Tomlinson has had quite the resurgence this season, but much of that is due in large part to Conner’s ability to open up running lanes for the wily veteran. Conner has had one catch on the day for seven yards.
Jacob Tamme (TE/Indianapolis Colts): Tamme racked up two tackles on the day, as he continues to do his best work on special teams. As mentioned for the past four weeks, Tamme gets most of his work on that side of the ball rather than on the offensive side of the ball.
Micah Johnson (LB/Miami Dolphins): Practice Squad
Keenan Burton (free agent): Has worked out for several teams in the past weeks.
Trevard Lindley (CB/Philadelphia Eagles): Lindley was active for the Eagles Sunday Night game against the 49er’s and got some action in recording the game deciding interception during a fourth-quarter run by San Francisco. All of that is promising news for the rookie out of Kentucky as the Eagles place an emphasis on playing tougher defense throughout the rest of the season.
Jeremy Jarmon (DE/Washington Redskins): Jarmon was active during Week 5’s game against the Packers and had an instant contribution. The absence of Albert Haynsworth—out due to his brother’s death—gave Jarmon the chance to play and he did just that with an important late hit against Green Bay’s quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The hit was rather late, but it caused a game-ending interception that gave the Redskins the chance to win the game and they did just that with a game-winning field goal.
Garry Williams (OL/Carolina Panthers): Williams was able to see some action during the Panthers Sunday game against the Bears. He replaced teammate Travelle Wharton while he was getting his hand taped. That was about it for Williams and his playing time this season. Alfonso Smith (free agent): Smith had worked out for the Cowboys last week.
