Wildcat Blue Nation SEC Power Rankings (Week 5 Edition)
1. (1) Alabama (5-0) – Did you see what the Crimson Tide did to Florida yesterday? Alabama is by and far the class of the SEC and probably the country this year. I don’t see anyone else getting within 10 points of them this year. UP NEXT: @ South Carolina
2. (3) Auburn (5-0) – Look who is moving on up in the power rankings. True, Auburn wasted a second tier school in Louisiana Monroe 52-3, but the impressive thing is that Cameron Newton beat them with his arm and just rushed one time. Even without Newton, the Tigers racked up 233 yards and 4 TD’s on the ground. Newton is a true Heisman candidate, but the defense is still a little suspect. UP NEXT: @ Kentucky
3. (5) Arkansas (3-1) – I know that the Razorbacks had a bye week this week, but after seeing how easily Alabama dispatched Florida, I decided I was more impressed with the Hog’s four point loss to the Tide than I should have been. Arkansas probably gave the Tide their best game of the year and for that reason, they deserve a second look. UP NEXT: vs Texas A&M
4. (2) LSU (5-0) – Why can Les Miles not manage the clock at the end of the game? LSU looked horrible in their win over Tennessee last night and may be the worst 5-0 team in the nation. Their QB position is a mess but they still have enough defense to keep them in games. They are giving a new definition to “winning ugly”, but you have to give some respect for 5-0. UP NEXT: @ Florida
5. (6) South Carolina (3-1) – It’s proof that the SEC is a down league this year (there I said yet) when the teams on a bye look better than the teams that actually played. After a weeks reflection, I think that South Carolina’s 8 point loss to Auburn looks better in retrospect. UP NEXT: vs Alabama
6. (4) Florida (4-1) – It took Alabama to do it, but the Gators were finally exposed as a bad-for-Florida-standards-team. I have not heard anyone address it, but when is the press going to jump on Urban Meyer for replacing his starting QB with a true freshman on a goal line play at the number one team in the country. Who does that? Urbs may be a rebel coach, but that was a stupid move. UP NEXT: vs LSU
7. (7) Mississippi State (3-2) – The Bulldogs demolished Alcorn State and Dan Mullen is back to his two headed QB system. Not a lot to see here with a 49-16 win over Steve McNair’s former school. Mississippi State will have to beat someone of note to crack the upper division. UP NEXT: @ Houston
8. (9) Mississippi (3-2) – They are the Dan Fout’s San Diego Chargers of the SEC West. Look for lots of 42-35 games as the offense is loaded and the defense not so much. UP NEXT: bye week
9. (8). Kentucky (3-2) – It’s a shame that in a weak SEC, UK can not still crawl into the upper tier of the league. Perhaps Kentucky will learn that you can not win with bad coaching playcalling, turnovers, bad special team play, and penalties. Am I being a little rough? Giving up 90 points in 2 games warrant it. UP NEXT: vs Auburn
10. (11) Tennessee (2-3) – Rarely does a team move up in the standings due to losing, but the Volunteers have actually played LSU and Florida pretty tough this season and lost by a total of just 16 points. True, they can’t count to 11 and probably deserved to win at Death Valley, but moving up a spot is the equivalent of a moral victory in the WBN Power Rankings. UP NEXT: @ Georgia
11. (10) Georgia (1-4) – AJ Green is back for the Dawgs, but is that enough of a boost to salvage their season? Probably not as Georgia lost on to the road to Colorado in a very close game. At one time, that would have meant something. Not anymore. Colorado is so desperate for good football they rush the field when beating a 1-4 team. How the mighty have fallen. UP NEXT: Tennessee
12. (12) Vanderbilt (1-3) – Vandy marched out of the SEC and got drilled by a middle of the road Big East team, UConn. I used to think that even Vandy’s defense sill had some pride and could keep games close, but they hit a new low in giving up 40 to the Huskies. UP NEXT: Eastern Michigan
