I got this text message from one of my buddies last night:
’30 Days to Big Blue Madness!!!! Can You Believe It?” I chuckled, because he is not like myself, plugged into everything on site, in fact, his kids got him the phone that sends text messages just a couple months ago. I called him back and asked in my best serious voice, “Whattaya mean in 30 days? Big Blue Madness goes on every day”. I then proceeded to tell him what precious little insider information I knew about the Cats and the coming season, and he stops me and says, “Wait, I want to find out about it when I watch the TV special.” I complain that it might get out before then and he says he doesn’t care, he holds off on purpose finding anything out about the Cats until the day of Big Blue Madness, then he immerses himself in it all day beforehand, looking over player Bios, stats and articles, cranks up his DVD player and watches the highlights from last season, and just a complete mosh pit of UK. We have been friends for a long time and I never knew he did this. When I asked him why, he said “It’s a holiday for me. Just like Christmas and New Years!” he tells me he has a calendar he puts beside his chair in the living room and he starts marking it off a month in advance.
We get to talking about Cal and what the season may have to offer and he says he is glad he doesn’t try to keep up all year long because that would just be too exhausting. When I told him a bout the “Calipari Effect” he busted out laughing, and agreed wholeheartedly. I have convinced him to come over to my place this year so we can watch together on the big screen and I plan on showing him the Blog, and some info on what all we do in the off season trying to prepare for Madness. Which brings me to my point. Big Blue Madness is not just the TV show.
We are on fire in UK Land right now, partly because we are under assault from all sides, but mostly because we cannot wait until the next big thing happens. Cal and his band of merry men never stop amazing me. One minute they are raising money for a foreign country. The next minute they are giving out shoes and washing feet of children up north, then they are handing out food the next. Any one ever hear of other programs doing these kinds of things? I don’t, and I pay close attention to several programs across the U.S.
Something I do want to make all of you aware of is the plight of former Wildcat and Unforgettable Sean Woods. This article on Yahoo Sports explains in some detail about what Sean is dealing with as the Head Coach of Mississippi Valley State University. I spoke to Sean and he gave me info on where we can send donations should anyone want to try and help out an old Wildcat. So if anyone wants the info please feel free to send me an e-mail at gakedw@yahoo.com and I will get it out to you right away.
So, 30 days to Big Blue Madness, huh? Not me bub…..I live it, and love it, everyday.
