Stevie Johnson (WR/Buffalo Bills): Johnson was the Bills top receiver Sunday which is a drastic switch from his days of years past. Johnson was targeted five times by quarterback Trent Edwards and caught three of those passes for 40 yards, but no touchdown. It looks as if Johnson’s role with the Bills will remain consistent throughout the season as the No. 2 receiver behind Lee Evans.
Tim Masthay (P/Green Bay Packers): Masthay displayed a punter’s prowess with four punts for a total of 166 yards and an average of 41.5 yards. Despite having a 48-yard bomb during the game, Masthay was unable to get it within the Eagles 20-yard line or rack up a touchback. All in all, it was a solid debut for the former Kentucky Wildcats punter and Masthay should have a solid season overall.
Myron Pryor (NT/New England Patriots): The New England Patriots manhandled the Bengals and a big part of that was the Patriots defensive line. Pryor and starting nose tackle Vince Wilfork had a field day with the Bengals offensive line as Pryor went on to rack up two tackles to go along with a hit on the quarterback. Another positive sign was the fact that Pryor kept his motor running throughout the game and was responsible for half a sack (.5) along with teammate Tully Banta-Cain. Pryor should expect to see much of the same time and production throughout the 2010-11 seasons.
Corey Peters (DT/Atlanta Falcons): Peters and teammate Peria Jerry were responsible for controlling the left side of the defensive line, but did a fairly poor job of getting the Steelers running attack in check. Peters did have two tackles (one solo) on the day, but it was the lack of tackling that put the Falcons in trouble. Peters will likely continue to split reps with Jerry, so it’s important for him to take note of his first game mistakes and improve upon them during Week 2 practice.
Wesley Woodyard (LB/Denver Broncos): Denver suffered a Week 1 loss to the Jaguars, but it was nice to see Woodyard back in his familiar role. The versatile Broncos linebacker racked up one tackle on the day, but continues to see his reps go to teammates D.J. Williams, Mario Haggan, Robert Ayers, and Jason Hunter, all of whom led the team in tackles. Woodyard’s versatility will definitely shine through as the season progresses and his performance in Week 1 shouldn’t disappoint anyone.
Micah Johnson (LB/Miami Dolphins): Signed August 3, Johnson was able to see some playing time Sunday for the Dolphins and even racked up a tackle in doing so. It will be tough however to get extended reps during the season with newly acquired free agent Karlos Dansby, who occupies the starting right side linebacker position.
John Conner (FB/New York Jets): Conner won’t see many reps handling the rock, but he is getting the brunt of the playing time at fullback for the Jets. Dubbed ‘The Terminator’ by his coaches and teammates, Conner’s duties will reflect his prowess for knocking players on their ass. Conner had some pretty good hits against the Ravens Monday night, but Baltimore was able to contain the Jets running game fairly well for 116-yards. Conner will need to continue to pave the way for guys like LaDanian Tomlinson and Shonn Greene for the Jets to be an effective team.
