If you were born after 1980 and you enjoy sports (and I’m presuming you do, you are reading this site), then you know about the Madden/NCAA football series. You have seen the video game franchise grow into a monster, selling millions of copies worldwide. One of the features of the game is a dynasty mode, where you can control a college team from the ground up and turn it into a powerhouse. As a blue-blooded UK fan, you should always pick UK as your team and lead them to national championship glory and the inevitable postseason accolades. That is always what I did and every year the Kentucky Wildcats went 12-0 with the player of my choice winning the Heisman. The last two years that man has been the venerable Randall Cobb, and now the time has come to make at least one part of that a reality. Not the national championship part, mind you, that part is practically impossible playing out of the SEC East; but getting one of the best players to suit up for the University of Kentucky college’s most respected trophies. His position puts him at a disadvantage, the last WR to win a Heisman was Desmond Howard in 1991 and since QB’s and RB’s have become essentially the only positions capable of winning. But when you start looking at the facts, the case is there and the stats are worthy.
Randall Cobb has made an impact since the day he got onto campus, making plays and curing lepers, and the UK athletic department needs to recognize it and get the Heisman propaganda machine going. The trophy is given to “the most outstanding player in college football” and it is impossible to argue that Cobb is anything less than that. 27 touchdowns for his career puts him 2nd on the list at Kentucky, with many more to come, but it was the way in which he got those scores that makes him outstanding. Whether it was rushing (10 TD in 2009), receiving (4 TD in 2009), or returning (1 TD in 2009), Cobb made plays when the Big Blue needed them. For comparison, 2009 Heisman winner Mark Ingram only had 2 more touchdowns than that. Ingram gained 630 yards more, but that is also while being surrounded by more blue chip-ers than a Vegas Blackjack dealer. After basically putting the team on his shoulders in 2008 and making 4 starts in the SEC as a freshman quarterback, Cobb has finally settled into the position in which he will have a future and can work on building his stats there. Now with a little support and a little less heat on him, Cobb’s numbers are sure to go up and the university has to seize the opportunity to get his name out on the ballot and get exposure out there. He may not win it this year, and it’s even harder to win it at an off-position in a middle of the pack conference team, but somebody’s going to notice eventually, and when that happens, Randall Cobb will transform into a being of pure light and ascend into the echelons of greatness. The Facebook movement has already started, and it’s time we get the real thing going. Grab your keys.
