Most fans just simply refer to it as “Game One”. After 70 years of never playing each other in football, the Kentucky Wildcats and the Louisville Cardinals squared off at Commonwealth Stadium to renew their intra-state rivalry. And they were playing for the Governors’ Cup, a new trophy awarded to the annual winner of the game to add more to the rivalry. Between 1912 and 1924 the two teams played each other 6 times with Kentucky winning all 6 meetings by a combined score of 220-0. Although Louisville wasn’t shut out in 1994, the end result was the same – a Kentucky win. Running back Moe Williams opened up the scoring for the Wildcats with a 4 yard touchdown run. Kentucky added another score when quarterback Antonio O’Ferral connected with wide receiver Clyde Rudolph on a 64 yard touchdown pass. And with 3:18 left in the game on the Louisville 4 yard line, O’Ferral ran a quarterback keeper into the endzone to go up 20-14. Louisville’s last chance to win it ended when quarterback Marty Lowe’s pass was intercepted by Donte’ Key at the Kentucky 15 yard line with 27 seconds left in the game.
