So there I was in Savannah for vacation this last week in the parking lot of the historic Clary’s Diner at 11:30PM waiting for a ghost tour to begin. I was wearing my “UK2K” shirt and it was only a few minutes before a fellow Wildcat sauntered over and we struck up a conversation about what else, basketball. After learning that I ran a UK blog, he started peppering me with questions about recruiting and specifically Anthony Wroten.
Using logic, I tried to explain how I thought in my humble opinion that a Wroten commitment if it came, would be a long time aways. I tried to break down my argument logically, explaining the limited scholarships and the need to add frontcourt players in case Kanter and Jones left, the impact the NBA lockout could have on the players, and the fact that if Brandon Knight stayed, Wroten may not get much PT with the Teague?Knight combo.
My fellow Cat did not want to hear any of that. He used Twitter as his main argument and said “He loves Kentucky. That is all he tweets about”. I could not argue there. I have written stories about Wroten’s tweet and like most of the BBN had circled July 12 down on my calendar as the time Wroten may commit.
That date came and went and there went the speculation that Wroten may have received an offer from Kentucky in Germany and was ready to commit. And the issue of the whole offer from UK has caused quite a bit of debate. Consider me in the camp that feels an offer is a long ways off due to the reason I have given. Wroten has claimed to have gotten an offer before, but recently he talked to Jody Demling and finally cleared the air about the UK offer. He has not been offered by UK and even if he received an offer:
"“It’s not like I would commit right away.”"
Turns out that Wroten is just funning with the Kentucky fans.
"“Have you seen how many Kentucky fans are on Twitter?” Kentucky has the most people on Twitter by far, and that’s why everybody thinks I am so involved with Kentucky. There’s not many Louisville, UConn or Nova fans on Twitter. At Kentucky, the whole student section is on Twitter.”“I love Twitter. I’m not going to hide my feeling from nobody. I love talking to the Kentucky fans and all. I am just having fun when I’m away from basketball"
So there you have it. Wroten would be teasing the Cardinal fans and Husky fans if there were any to talk to but he has focused his flirtation on the biggest stud in the school … Kentucky. And Kentucky fans love him. But let’s temper the Wroten love a bit. Yes, I would love to have the kid on the Kentucky squad and would love to have him be a Wildcat, but do I need to remind Kentucky fans of the last recruit who overhyped his recruitment and built false drama via twitter?
Kyrie Irving. And we remember how that worked out.
And there is yet another reason to assume that Wroten may be playing the Wildcat fans? He is also looking that the Dirty Cards and considers Peyton Silva a “best friend”:
"“I love their pressure defense and Coach Pitino. My best friend, Peyton Siva, is there. That’s one of the reasons they are on my list.”"
And in almost the same breath, he mentions Marquis Teague and Michael Gilchrist as “his two guys”. Keep in mind, I am not trying to bash or attack a high school kid … just stating that we should not take his word and feigned interest in Kentucky as Gospel. But why should I say that? Let Tony tell you that in his own words:
"“I have all of those schools in the mix. Other than that I could make a decision anytime. I could make it tomorrow, or I could make it next year. I don’t know.“…But Kentucky is always on Twitter and showing me the love, so that’s why I like to have fun with them.”"
