Inside The Numbers: Kentucky vs. Florida

Today at noon on CBS, the #3 Kentucky Wildcats will battle the Florida Gators at Rupp Arena on “Senior Day”. The Wildcats rebounded from their loss to Tennessee by beating the Georgia Bulldogs in Athens on Wednesday. Florida is currently on a 2 game losing streak, they lost to Georgia in Athens on February 27th and Vanderbilt in Gainesville on Tuesday. With Vanderbilt losing to South Carolina yesterday, the Wildcats clinched their 44th SEC Championship outright. Here are some numbers and facts of interests headed into today’s game:

Regular Season Win Machine
With one regular season game left on the schedule, the Wildcats have tied the school record for most regular season wins with 28. The 1946-1947 Kentucky squad had a 28-2 regular season record. That particular team went on to win the SEC Tournament, but lose in the NIT Championship game to Utah.

Home Perfection
With a win against the Gators, Kentucky would finish the season 18-0 at home. That would tie the record for most wins at home in UK history. The 1985-1986 Kentucky squad was 18-0 at home, which included 3 SEC Tournament games. If the Wildcats were to win today it would be their 9th season in which they finished the season undefeated in home games at Rupp Arena. The last time UK went undefeated at home was 1999-2000, when they were 14-0 at Rupp Arena.

John Wall And 500 Points
John Wall is only 7 points away from surpassing the 500 point mark on the season. More then likely he will surpass that mark against Florida, his 30th game at UK. If it happens, John Wall would be the 9th player in UK history to score 500 career points within 30 games at UK. Here are the 8 players to accomplish that feat so far:

Cotton Nash (1961-1962): 22 games
Mike Casey (1967-1968): 25 games
Johnny Cox (1956-1957): 26 games
Kevin Grevey (1972-1973): 27 games
Bob Burrow (1954-1955): 27 games
Bill Spivey (1949-1950): 28 games
Louie Dampier (1964-1965): 29 games
Dan Issel (1967-1968): 30 games

Cousins And Wall Scoring Duo
DeMarcus Cousins and John Wall have combined to score 969 points on the season so they are 31 points away from scoring 1,000 points as a duo. To put that into perspective, the record for most points scored by a freshman duo coming into this season was 645 points by Sam Bowie and Derrick Hord in the 1979-1980 season. The record for most points scored by a duo in their first year at UK is 985 points by Mike Casey and Dan Issel in the 1967-1968 season. They were both sophomores but freshman couldn’t play varsity basketball back then, hence why it was their first year playing for UK. So DeMarcus and John only need 17 points to break that record.
