Memorable Game
March 2nd, 1997
Rupp Arena (Attendance: 24,326)
UK Senior Day
#3 Kentucky – 66
#6 South Carolina – 72
It was Senior Day at Rupp Arena as the Big Blue Faithful came to honor Derek Anderson, Anthony Epps, and Jared Prickett at their final home game. This was the first, and only so far, meeting between Kentucky and South Carolina in which both teams were ranked in the top 10 of the AP Poll coming into the game. The #6 Gamecocks had come into the game on fire winning 17 of their last 18 games. The #3 Wildcats weren’t much worse, coming into the game with a 27-3 record. South Carolina built an 11 point lead early due to UK’s poor shooting, they shot 32.4% as a team for the game. But, the Wildcats clawed and even took a 4 point lead, their largest of the game, midway through the 2nd half. UK head coach Rick Pitino was ejected from the game in the final minute after getting his first technical foul for arguing a call, then his second for making contact with an official. But the Gamecocks proved to be too much as they went on to win 72-66, UK’s 1st loss on Senior Day since 1964, and the only time that a team beat Rick Pitino twice in the same season while at UK. B.J. McKie, South Carolina’s all-time leading scorer, led the Gamecocks with 22 points. The Wildcats were led by sophomore sensation Ron Mercer with 25 points.
