NFL recap Week 14: Woodyard, Broncos struggle to contain Manning, Colts

Wesley Woodyard (Broncos)-Woodyard and former teammate Jacob Tamme had the pleasure of facing off this past weekend, but the Broncos didn’t end up the victors in this instance. With the Colts on a roll, looking to go (13-0), it was a tough day for Woodyard and the Broncos to break up a chance at regular season perfection and stop the Colts 22-game regular season winning streak. Woodyard did continue to add onto his solid season as a backup linebacker for the Broncos. He recorded three tackles, one of them being a solo tackle. As said plenty of times before, he’s plenty versatile on the defensive side of the ball and should be able to use that to extend his career for several years.
Steve Johnson (Bills)-Nada. Zip. Zilch. Essentially what Steve Johnsons’ season has been like with the Buffalo Bills. He sits on the bottom of the totum pole at the wide receiver position and has essentially had zero opportunities to prove his worth to the (5-8) Bills. Out of the 14 NFL weeks thus far on the season, Johnson has either seen no action or accumulated no statistics in nine of those weeks. Oh, make that ten with the Bills bye week that occurred in week 9. It’s been a tough go of it for Johnson in the early years of his NFL career. Hopefully he can find his way onto a team that will utilize his skills on the field rather than on the bench.
Jacob Tamme (Colts)-Tamme wound up the winner in Sunday’s matchup against Woodyard and the Broncos, but what was so unusual about this game was that Tamme actually played. While it wasn’t a lot, Peyton Manning did give Tamme one opportunity on the day that ended up as an incompletion. Also a bonus is the fact that he can play on special teams as well. What is interesting for Tamme and the Colts is the team’s upcoming decision on whether they want to pursue perfection and go 16-0. If they do, then the regular’s on the team will continue to play rather than rest for the playoffs which the Colts have already secured home field advantage for. If they choose to rest their starters for the playoff push and potential Super Bowl appearance, then Tamme could very well find his way onto the field on the offensive side of the ball and produce for the first time this year.
Myron Pryor (Patriots)-Pryor didn’t see a whole lot of time this weekend, most likely due to the playoff picture for the Patriots at this point in the season. A lot of the minutes went to guys like Vince Wilfork and Ty Warren who as veterans are more accustomed to the late season push many teams have to go through in the NFL. Pryor is still an excellent talent with a bright future. He stands in the mold of several other defensive linemen that have played for Rich Brooks during his tenure at Kentucky. Pryor has a lot of quality skills on the defensive side of the ball that he should see his development improve each and every year.
Garry Williams (Panthers)-Williams may eventually end up seeing some action due to the ever increasing injuries to the Panther’s offensive line. Sunday’s game against the Patriots saw starting right tackle Jeff Otah injure is left knee, causing him to miss the rest of the game. First year player Geoff Schwartz slid over into Otah’s spot, but had only played on the practice squad before Sunday’s action. Williams plays on the left side behind Travelle Wharton, but may be inserted on the right side if things if it becomes necessary. Former University of Pitt lineman Rob Pettiti to replace Otah, but regardless, Williams may still have an opportunity to see some more playing time this season.
Jeremy Jarmon (Redskins)-injured/Keenan Burton (Rams)-injured
Andre Woodson (free agent), Johnny Williams (free agent), Marcus McClinton (UFL), Glenn Holt (UFL), Shane Boyd (free agent), Braxton Kelley (Broncos)-practice squad
Update: A hat-tip to KSR as they’ve mentioned Johnny Williams’ signing with the Pittsburgh Steelers earlier today for the rest of the season. Here’s the link for their update:
