Former Wildcats in the NFL: Week 8 edition

NFL Week 8 saw our former UK football players take action, as Keenan Burton made the most of his Sunday and was the most “prolific” former Cat on the weekend. Let’s take a look at how others fared:

Keenan Burton (Rams): Burton is clearly the #2 wide receiver on the depth charts for the Rams and he is doing his best to obtain that distinction next year with his recent play. It isn’t dazzling, but he did have the best game of his career on Sunday with five receptions for 54 yards. Once again, Burton struggled to find the end-zone and has yet to score a touchdown on the season. All of this game against one of the league’s worst teams in the Lions, so it is discouraging that he and his quarterbacks couldn’t hook up for six in the end-zone. The Rams don’t have many options at the wide receiver position so Burton will continue to get targets throughout the season the only question is whether they will turn into receptions and touchdowns. Burton and the Rams go into their BYE week for NFL Week 9.

Stevie Johnson (Bills): Johnson, for the second straight week, was able to see some playing time even if it wasn’t much. The Bills are awful at this point, so playing time for Johnson shouldn’t be of any problem for the organization. He had his first reception of the season for only five yards, but that’s a lot better than what we were seeing from him earlier in the season. The Bills should continue to give Johnson the chance to prove his worth in the NFL. The Bills lack a legitimate NFL quarterback, which could make it difficult for Johnson to get on a roll. Don’t expect too much more from the second year pro because hey, even Terrell Owens can’t do anything for the inept Bills offense.

Myron Pryor (Patriots)-Bye Week

Jeremy Jarmon (Redskins): Like Pryor, Jarmon also had the weekend off but did make his way to Lexington for Halloween festivities. I actually had the pleasure of meeting the Redskins defensive linemen and couldn’t have better things to say about the young man who has been through some rough patches in past months. As we all know, the NCAA suspended Jarmon for his entire senior season which has brought him to where he is at today. I think I speak for many UK fans in saying how proud we are of Jarmon, a sentiment I made clear to him when I met him. I also had a chance to ask what he thought of his recent playing time and the injury to fellow teammate Cornelius Griffin. He expressed excitement at the chance of garnering more playing time as the season progressed. Jarmon couldn’t be a more humble person and seems to be taking everything in stride. Great for the former UK-standout and I wish him the best of luck in the future.

Jacob Tamme (Colts): Tamme continues to ride the bench for the Colts, as they continue their surge towards perfection. They beat the 49er’s on Sunday in a close game, but Tamme didn’t get to see too much time on the offensive side of things. He did get some time on special teams last week as he recorded a tackle. This week was all for not, with no receptions or tackles on the game. Tamme is a promising young tight-end and his play could definitely be used for this year’s UK football team. I highly doubt that his entire career will be spent with the Colts, but I think he could find his way on with another, less prolific team and find some time there. Opportunities still exist on the Colts if an injury to Dallas Clark occurred, but he’s been pretty reliable for the Colts in recent years.

Wesley Woodyard (Broncos): Woodyard and the Broncos had their worst performance of the 2009 season, as they got trounced (30-7) by the Ravens. Woodyard has been a consistent leader for the Broncos defense on the season, but Sunday was a different story. He isn’t a starter but does get solid minutes behind the likes of D.J. Williams and Andra Davis. It will continue to play out like that, but we shouldn’t be discouraged because Woodyard has shown that he can get it done at the NFL level. He had two tackles; one for a loss, on the day.

Garry Williams (Panthers)-reserve offensive left tackle

Johnny Williams- free agent

Andre Woodson (Redskins)-practice squad

Ventrell Jenkins-free agent

Rafael Little-free agent

Braxton Kelley (Broncos)-practice squad.
