Tobias Harris shaping up to be a Pitino/Calipari battle, UK still seems strong with Doron Lamb
By Staff
As we said earlier this week, the UK coaching staff had set up a series of in-home visits for a number of 2010 basketball recruits. Since those visits start this week, let’s take a look at the first two in home visits.
Tobias Harris – Sept 9
Tobias Harris has set up 11 in home visits and has stated that he will cut his list to 5 shortly thereafter. The interesting thing with his recruitment is that a decision may come shortly after the in home visits . According to his dad Torrell, they have already visited the schools previously and make a decision without making an official visit. “Don’t be surprised if a decision may be made after the home visits.” Torrell Harris told Adam Zagoria. Tobias recently ran down his list of top schools: “Right now, I don’t have a top list, but the schools right now I am looking at are Kentucky, Georgia Tech, Notre Dame, Louisville, Syracuse, Connecticut, St. John’s, Tennessee, Oklahoma, West Virginia, and Maryland.”
The key to Harris’s commitment may be which school will allow him to be a “point forward” and be a playmaker from the foward position. Earl Clark successfully used his experience at that position to create a pathway to the NBA, a fact that is not lost on Torrell Haris:
“With Louisville and Rick Pitino, we are looking at a situation where a coach has proven that he can help my son to understand what it takes to be successful in the NBA. We’re not into one-and-done, so he’s going to get two years of training. The thing about Rick and Walter McCarty and those guys, we have been talking to them for almost two years now.”
While some camps use that kind of talk to put Harris firmly in the Cardinals camp, it should be noted that the Harris’s made an unofficial visit to Lexngton recently and that Tobias and Cal had a “great talk”.
“Kentucky is Kentucky. It’s a great school, and Coach Cal runs a great offense. I like his offense. We just have to see what’s best for him (Tobias).”
Doron Lamb – Sept 10
Doron Lamb has seemingly been focused on UK for a few months now and the interest has been mutual. Some pundits have tagged Doron as the first UK commit of the 2010 class, but that elusive recruitment still has not come. Lamb sent some UK fans into a panic recently when it was announced he would be attending Kansas’s “Late Night in the Phog” on October 16. And Kansas was rumored to be making an in house visit to Doron on September 10 as well, but apparently that is not happening either. Lamb’s dad Calvin states that no one from Kansas has talked to him about these visits.
“They have never contacted me or his mother. I haven’t talked to a Kansas coach yet. I know they have talked to Doron, I understand the rules, but I wish that a Kansas coach would call me so we can straighten this out. I like Kansas, but I don’t know as far as that visit, I don’t know anything about it, Doron doesn’t know anything about it either. They’re more than welcome though”
While it appears that Kansas is stilling in the running for his son, Kentucky is still very much an option according to Calvin:
“We haven’t decided anything. We liked Kentucky, but we aren’t just gonna pick a school without seeing all of the schools. It’s (UK) up there, but he wants to see Kansas, Oklahoma and others before deciding.”
