The focus is on Knight and Selby in the PG Derby as Irving and Jackson seem to fade away

A few weeks ago, I likened the race to see which 2010 PG would commit to Kentucky to a good old fashioned horse race. All four of the PG’s were fairly even at the time and it seemed any one could break out of the pack and commit first. Things have changed a bit as the race has tightened some, but some players are losing steam and fading away.

THE LEADERS

Brandon Knight and Josh Selby have emerged from the pack and now appear to be the two front runners for a UK point guard slot. Brandon Knight has not officially pared his list, but it seems that Miami, UK, and UConn are at the top of his list. Knight still has about 10 schools on his list and the buzz is that he will do some cutting on that list pretty soon. Selby has been rumored to be a Kentucky lean almost since he de-commitment from Tennessee, but Selby is definitely looking at other schools as well. He recently visited Oregon and then UConn yesterday, and is in the midst of arranging visits at UK and Kansas.

Dustin Rumbaugh of KSR recently floated an report of SG prospect Doron Lamb envisioning himself as a PG at the next level. His dad seemed to further that idea, saying that Doron was mainly considered a SG because of his scoring ability, but that his son was one of the best combo guards in the country. Calipari’s recent statement of playing a lineup of three PG’s would definitely be something that would benefit Lamb as well. No matter what position he ends up at, Doron still seems to really like UK, but he is taking a look at Oklahoma, Kansas, and possibly a second visit to Kentucky.

FADING BACK

Kyrie Irving at one time seemed to be a lock for UK but seems to be fading away now. Although he has listed UK in his top seven schools, Duke and Indiana have emerged as the leaders and he plans recent visits to both schools. It does look like he may still visit UK but Crean has seemed to be the leader for a month or so. Irving has said he will narrow his list to five soon and visit all five schools.

SCRATCHED

The interesting case of Joe Jackson has seemingly come to an end as he recently named a top three of Memphis, Tennessee, and Kansas. This was a confusing recruitment as Jackson had announced he would attend UK’s Midnight Madness and he had said that Calipari had told him he was UK’s top target. On the other side, it appears that UK had never offered Jackson a scholarship.

NEW FACES EMERGING IN 2011

Even after the 2010 recruiting season is over, it appears that Kentucky will continue to be a destination to top tier PG’s for years to come. #2 PG prospect Marquis Teague would be the equivalent of a slow starting horse that makes a furious charge down the homestretch. I had not mentioned Teagues name much because it seems he has been attached to Louisville for such a long time, and his commitment to them seemed a certainty. But so then did Fab Melo. Now Tague has announced that he will be making a visit to UK soon and UK is in his top 5.
