1 Mark rising, 1 Mark falling as sports host says Stoops is "behind the 8 ball"

Mark Pope and Mark Stoops are on opposite ends of their Kentucky careers, one in year 13 and one in year 2. But that's not the only difference between the two.

Kentucky football and Kentucky basketball are heading in two very different directions

That’s the message from popular YouTube host Sports Talk J, who pulled no punches in a recent segment dissecting the state of the Wildcats. His verdict? Mark Stoops is "behind the 8 ball" as fans are expecting winning seasons now.

And while football faces questions, basketball is riding high under Mark Pope—the first-year head coach who just took Kentucky to its first Sweet 16 since 2019.

Let’s break down what Sports Talk J had to say—and why he believes one Mark is climbing while the other’s in decline.

Stoops’ SEC struggles, especially at home

The numbers don’t lie. Sports Talk J pointed to a brutal home record that has many fans fed up:

  • 1-7 SEC record in 2024
  • 0 SEC home wins last season
  • Just 1 SEC home win in the past two years

That stretch includes gut-wrenching losses where fans packed Kroger Field only to head to the exits early. Time after time visiting fanbases are left to celebrate with their fans.

Time after time BBN kept showing up but they kept leaving disappointed.

The low point? A 41-14 home beatdown by Louisville, where the Cardinals led 20-0 at halftime and never looked back. Kroger Field was a ghost town by the final whistle.

Recruiting concerns mount for Kentucky football

The Big Dog may have lost his bite. Kentucky's 2025 football recruiting class currently ranks 24th nationally, but that stat is misleading.

“Five 4-stars. The rest are 3-star or lower." That’s not going to cut it in the SEC Sports Talk J warned.

Even more concerning? The Cats have just one commitment for the 2026 cycle as of mid-May.

With Georgia, Alabama, Texas, and LSU reloading every offseason; and Vandy and South Carolina improving, UK’s momentum under Stoops feels like it’s stalling—and the fan base is starting to notice.

Mark Pope’s first season in Lexington couldn’t have been more different.

Despite injuries to Lamont Butler, Andrew Carr, Kerr Kriisa, and Travis Perry, Kentucky rolled through a loaded schedule and earned a 3 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

Along the way, the Cats notched wins over:

  • Duke
  • Gonzaga
  • Tennessee (twice)
  • Louisville
  • Eventual national champion Florida in what many call the Game of the Year

In short, Pope overachieved with a banged-up roster—and he’s only just getting started.

A top-5 recruiting haul in every direction

Kentucky basketball’s recruiting outlook is miles ahead of football’s. Pope has both a Top 5 freshman class and a Top 5 transfer portal class on the way.

That’s not just hype. It’s depth, experience, and five-star firepower coming through the door. Pope’s roster will be ready to compete with anyone in the country—not just survive in the SEC.

“Two Marks. Two Directions.”

Mark Pope is energizing Big Blue Nation. Mark Stoops? He’s running out of excuses.

Final whistle

No one denies what Mark Stoops has done for Kentucky football over the past decade. He’s built a respectable program out of one that used to be an afterthought. But Mitch Barnhart must know fans are going to stop showing up if another 4-8 debacle happens again.

In the SEC, respect is temporary. And as Pope breathes new life into basketball, the contrast is getting harder to ignore.

Kentucky has two Mark's but right now, only one of them is trending in the right direction.
