In possibly the strongest position group for Kentucky Football, this young defensive secondary has something to prove in 2017.

Greg Ostendorf at ESPN put together a collective list of the SEC’s top secondaries for the 2017 season. National Signing Day has concluded and a few teams in the conference upgraded in the defensive backfield. Kentucky Football and their young secondary comes in ranked as the sixth best defensive backfield in the SEC.

Alabama continues to dominate the Post-Signing Day Position Rankings and tops this list again at No. 1. The Crimson Tide look to be reloading year after year with new top prospects making it to campus. This season, Nick Saban’s secondary will be led by 2016’s leader in interceptions, Minkah Fitzpatrick (6). The Tide return three out of the four starters from last seasons team.

The Rest of the Field

The Georgia Bulldog secondary returns all four of their starters who finished near the top of the SEC in pass defense last season. Florida, LSU, and South Carolina respectively round out the top five.

Kentucky Football comes in ranked at No. six. Mark Stoops and company have built a strong defensive secondary. This led by big corners and physical safeties. Derrick Baity and Chris Westry look to take care of the boundaries in 2017. The junior duo have been starters since they arrived on campus. Along with tall, strong corners, Kentucky returns its top safety in Mike Edwards. Edwards finished last season with a trio of interceptions and 100 tackles. Physicality is key in Mark Stoops’ defensive backfield.

Young Stars

Youngsters like Jordan Griffin and Tobias “Cash” Gilliam look to step up in relief of the starters. Cats fans should get to know Kentucky native and former Henry Clay Blue Devil Davonte Robinson as well. Kendall Randolph looks to replace Blake McClain as the starting nickel back. Junior College transfer Lonnie Johnson is a player to keep an eye on as well.

The amount of depth that the coaching staff has built with this position group is outstanding. Stoops has made it clear what kind of recruit satisfies his tastes in corners. Big, strong and physical describe nearly every defensive back on the roster.
