John Calipari has a system that no other coach has in the NCAA. Pushing players to go beyond a typical college experience to be ready for the NBA. Playing with the best, to be the best before getting paid to play against the best in the NBA.

John Calipari’s best tool is molding young players into young men that can go to the league and perform. Calipari has stated many times recently about the idea of getting rid of the one and done rule in College Basketball. The NCAA and John Calipari don’t get along when it comes to coming in an agreement with things. Calipari recently stated how the NCAA and other teams would not like to see players stay for two years or longer at the University of Kentucky.

“I’m the one guy out there saying we’ve gotta change this somehow,” Calipari said. “We’ve gotta encourage these kids to stay two years. But the NCAA’s gotta do some stuff, and if they don’t do it we need to separate from them. I’m not afraid to say it. Look, they’ve embarrassed me. I’ve done nothing, so they’re not gonna come in, show retribution to me and do stuff. I don’t really care. But something’s gotta change with this one and done rule. I seem to be the coach saying anything.”

Over the past few years we’ve all seen what John Calipari can put up and produce with team play. Last years team was the only flaw for the style of recruiting that John Calipari goes after each year. It was indeed a down year for recruiting, and the talent wasn’t like it was in the previous years. Last year’s team changed John’s strategy in several key ways. He will still recruit the best, but in the mean time recruit players that will stick around and produce strong bench play for the Wildcats.

John Calipari is a non conformist in a way for what he is trying to do in College Basketball. No one is coming close to doing what he’s done in the game. Cal is changing the game in his recruiting, and preparing them for the NBA in mass numbers that no coach has done in recent history. Players come first, and that’s exactly what Calipari is about.

For months now, “experts” have been stating that they have no idea where Andrew Wiggins will go when he finally makes his decision. They cautioned us to not listen to any rumors or to believe it when someone said they had the inside info as to where Wiggins will land.

With the decision less than 24 hours away, people are finally being forced to pick. And it’s Florida State with the early lead.

All of CBS’ bloggers have Wiggins going to Florida State.

And now, it’s time for a prediction.

I think he ends up at Florida State. The Seminoles have been involved with him the longest time, and the family connection is a huge advantage for Leonard Hamilton. Wiggins isn’t a fan of overwhelming media attention, and he would be able to avoid that somewhat in Tallahassee. Moreover, he would get to be the go-to-guy from Day 1.

Jeff Goodman: “Florida State, but don’t count out Kansas.”

Gary Parrish: Florida State. “Combine the family’s connection to the school with Leonard Hamilton’s reputation as an elite recruiter with the fact that Wiggins won’t really have to share the ball in Tallahassee.”

Matt Norlander: “FSU.”

Well, first things first. I didn’t know Leonard Hamilton was tabbed as an elite recruiter. John Calipari- Yes. Bill Self- Yes. Roy Williams- Kind of. Leornard Hamilton- That’s news to me.

Also, I don’t think Wiggins is concerned with sharing the ball. If there is one thing I have learned about Wiggins during this entire process, it’s that he does not demand attention and that he can play within a system and doesn’t have to be the focus of the system. Add to the fact that Hamilton’s slow as molasses offense and grind it out style is the worst fit for Wiggins, I find it silly that FSU got 100% of the vote here.

<a href="And now, it's time for a prediction. I think he ends up at Florida State. The Seminoles have been involved with him the longest time, and the family connection is a huge advantage for Leonard Hamilton. Wiggins isn't a fan of overwhelming media attention, and he would be able to avoid that somewhat in Tallahassee. Moreover, he would get to be the go-to-guy from Day 1. All of a sudden Kansas bumps Kentucky out of the “close second to Florida State” conversation. Hmmm…

247Sports.com has their own poll, which is their most popular place on their site today, and 12 out of the 17 predictions are going for Florida State. The five that are predicting Kentucky are three Kentucky writers (one being our own Josh Kays), a Duke blogger and the 247Sports.com publisher.

As of now the Seminoles are getting the love from the national media. There is no rhyme or reason to their predictions other than “His parents went there” and the phantom notion that Leonard Hamilton is somehow emerged as an uber-recruiter.

My gut says Kentucky and so does my brain. Offensive system, John Calipari, NBA connections, program prestige and the chance to be a part of a great team, something that Wiggins cares about, leads me to believe that Kentucky is the place for him tomorrow.

*We will have a special podcast up tonight at midnight featuring Jason Marcum, Josh Kays and myself. It will be our last thougths on Wiggins. It will be a joint post with my guide to the Wiggins announcement. Enjoy, thanks for the support and Go Cats.

John Calipari and staff have put together an amazing 2013 class with 8 commitments, and still waiting on Andrew Wiggins to make his decision. With so much talent coming in this season ESPN’s Chad Ford said that Kentucky could have 8 picks in the 1st round with 4 of them maybe going in the top 10. So what does that mean? It means Kentucky will be extremely loaded this season, and that they are going to most likely have most of these guys for only one year. Kentucky already has a commitment in the 2014 class top 10 forward out of New Jersey Karl Towns. So I wanted to give you my wish list for who I want to join Towns in Lexington.

Jahlil Okafor- The reason why I want Okafor to join Towns is because the versatility those two big guys play with. Towns can play outside, and shoot lights out from 3 point range at 7 foot tall. Okafor is a bruiser down low, and I like to compare him to Demarcus Cousins. Okafor is very quick for a guy his size, and has amazing hands under the basket. If Cal can somehow get Okafor to join towns in Lexington that will give Kentucky the best frontcourt in college basketball.

Emmanuel Mudiay- When I saw Mudiay play earlier this year I was amazed by the speed he has, and the leadership ability he brings on and off the court. I compare Mudiay to a quicker John Wall. Yes, I said a quicker John Wall something I never thought I would say, but Mudiay is extremely quick. One thing Wall had to work on in college was his jump shot, but if Kentucky lands Mudiay they won’t have that problem. Mudiay does everything so well that I can’t find a flaw in his game, and I really hope he becomes our point guard after the Harrison Twins depart Lexington for the NBA.

Stanley Johnson- I know most people would have said top 5 forward Trey Lyles, but I think Johnson will be a better college player for one season in college. I talked to a scout this weekend that watched Johnson in Los Angeles, and he compared him to Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, and if anybody can be a MKG I am all for it. John Calipari was in LA to watch Johnson as well, and he already has an offer.

If we can get this class or add Cliff Alexander, Trey Lyles, Rashaad Vaughn then John Calipari will have another #1 recruiting class coming into Lexington for the 2014-2015 season.

“Everybody roots for David, no one roots for Goliath.”

Wilt Chamberlain

This weekend, we’ve all witnessed the first 15 seeded team reach the Sweet 16 in NCAA Tourney history as the Florida Gulf Coast University Eagles advanced, defeating Georgetown and San Diego State. LaSalle, a 13 seed, will join them as well. Recently, the number of small teams or “mid majors” have enjoyed success with George Mason reaching the Final Four in 2006, Virginia Commonwealth University reaching the Final Four in 2011 and Butler University reaching back to back championship games in 2010 and 2011. And people around the nation rejoiced because everyone loves an underdog.

Except if the school you root for calls Lawrence, Chapel Hill, Durham, Westwood or Lexington home.

I’ve often wondered why the Unforgettables are, in fact, unforgettable. Yes, that was the team that brought Kentucky back to national prominence, but there was something else. For the first time, and I dare say only time in Kentucky’s storied history, the Wildcats were an underdog that season, up to the epic Elite Eight game against the Blue Devils of Duke University. We’ve seen the Laettner shot. We’ve debated how much better the Sean Woods shot was. We remember Thomas Hill crying. We remember Mashburn being the best player on the court for most of the game. But what we remember most fondly about that team was that they weren’t supposed to be there. Kentucky wasn’t supposed to be back. Sports Illustrated ran the famous “Kentucky Shame” cover. Pundits and college basketball analysts said that the Cats couldn’t return… and they did.

Oct 24, 2011; Lexington, KY, USA; All Stars The Villains head coach Christian Laettner wipes the floor during a timeout as his team plays the Big Blue All Stars in an exhibition game at Rupp Arena.
And for that one night in Philadelphia, the University of Kentucky Wildcats were underdogs.

In the years following, I can’t recall a game where the Cats won where I was 100% surprised. Oh, there have been the championship games in 1996, 1998 and 2012, with the 1998 run providing the most improbable wins. But at no point did people say, “Kentucky won? I never would have thought!” Even with this year’s team which underachieved for long stretches of the season, the wins over Florida and Missouri weren’t surprises, that was how well the team was supposed to play.

I’ve watched the small conference basketball tournaments on ESPN over the years, and “I’ve thought, what would it be like to just be happy to make the dance?” Although, admittedly, I probably would have danced for joy myself had Kentucky been announced this past Selection Sunday. But those teams get to play the “nobody believed in us” card that Kentucky coaches, from Rupp to Calipari, just don’t get to play. Because the Big Blue Nation does believe in them, almost to a fault.

Everyone loves an underdog, from the New York Jets winning Super Bowl III, to the 1980 US Men’s hockey team, to Buster Douglass knocking Mike Tyson out. But for every David, there’s a Goliath. A team or person that didn’t win because the underdog did the impossible. And even when Goliath isn’t as fierce or as formidable as he’s perceived to be, there’s still joy in the little guy winning. Just asks the folks at Robert Morris.

Archie Goodwin has taken more heat from the media and fans than any one player I can remember since my days of watching Kentucky basketball. I remember at one point of the season a lot of people were hoping he would go pro after this season because of his decision making on the court. Although; in the last 10 games Archie was one of the few that looked like they really wanted to be on the floor, and was happy to wear a Kentucky jersey.

I will try to be as fair as I can on grading Archie Goodwin on the season, but let me remind everybody that he was my favorite player besides Noel on the team.

After some really hard thinking about the season as a whole I gave Archie a B- and I know some people may think that is a little high, but those are the people who don’t like his game one bit, and want him gone. This teams problem all year was playing hard, and fighting till the end of games. Thats one aspect of Archie’s game that nobody could question. He was always giving a 100% while on the floor, and would do anything to win the game, but the problem was some of his teammates didn’t do the same.

Archie is a NBA guard already in my opinion, and the reason I say that is because those NBA scouts love guys that attack the rim like he does. He gave us some of the best dunk saw all season, and his athleticism is off the charts.

Some things he needs to work if he comes back to school next season which I fully expect him to is just decision making, and playing under control. If he can do that, and with all the talent around him coming in next year he could actually improve his draft stock from a mid 1st round guy to a lottery pick.

Many people may disagree with my high grade of Archie, but looking at the season as a whole he gave us more than just about anybody on the team.

Needless to say, since Kentucky is missing out on the NCAA tournament, this year has been a major disappointment for the Wildcats. Since the best they could get was an invitation to the NIT, there wasn’t much else to look forward to this season. The Cats came out in their opening game of the NIT like they didn’t want to be there and were ready for the season to be over. Robert Morris played extremely competitive and jumped out to an early double-digit lead. The Cats shot poorly in the first half and committed numerous turnovers. However, Polson and Goodwin played with intensity and helped Kentucky come back to only trail by a point at halftime. Kentucky continued to struggle in the second half as they trailed until they were able to tie the game with a couple of minutes left. The Cats had the chance to win or tie the game on a last second shot but were unable to convert. Kentucky can now regroup and start building towards next season.

Stats:

> Archie Goodwin- 18 points, 7 rebounds, and 1 assist

> Jarrod Polson- 10 points, 3 assists, and 1 rebound

The Wildcats traveled to Georgia to face off against the Bulldogs in a must-win game. They entered the game listed as one of the first four teams out of the NCAA tournament. The Cats had a slow first half due in part to their poor shooting. They were 1-9 on three-pointers, 3-10 on free throws, and shot under 40 % from the field overall. Despite their subpar shooting, the Cats only trailed by five points at halftime because Georgia wasn’t shooting the ball well either. The second half didn’t get any easier for the Cats. They continued to struggle shooting the ball and simply seemed outhustled at times. They shot 6-26 on three-pointers and allowed the Bulldogs to dominate the offensive boards and take advantage of second-chance opportunities. The Bulldogs also shot well from the free throw line and accumulated a double-digit lead that the Cats couldn’t overcome. The loss of Noel is really taking its toll and the team seems all out of sorts. This loss certainly doesn’t help their chances of making the NCAA tournament.

Stats:

> Ryan Harrow- 11 points and 4 rebounds

> Alex Poythress- 4 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists

Some in the Big Blue Nation would point out that Kentucky allowed the Rebels to go on a 16-0 run in the second half, but I’d counter with the fact that they closed out a tough opponent at home, even with giving up a big lead. And that’s a huge step from the game from Alabama just a few weeks ago.

The one constant this season, and everyone knows this, has been Nerlens Noel. Against Ole Miss, Noel anchored the Kentucky defense, swatting away a school record 12 shots and changing at least a dozen more. As we all witnessed with Anthony Davis last year, a shot blocker that even leads to opponents NOT driving the lane is a huge benefit to have on defense. And when the Cats get their defensive rotations down better, more of Noel’s blocked shots will lead to better opportunities on the offensive end. And like Davis and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist before him, Noel is ready to play from tip to horn and we’ve finally seen some dividends from Noel’s leadership as Alex Poythress has stepped up his game as well, especially diving on the floor for loose balls.

The change from high school to college is not an easy one. And it can’t be easy while you have to adjust to college life under the microscope that is University of Kentucky Men’s Basketball. So, more than most, I’ve not let Poythress’s or Archie Goodwin’s growing pains get me down. Why? Because their talent is undeniable. Finally, down in Oxford, we got to see how great they can both play when they slow down and play within Coach Cal’s team concepts. Poythress attacked the basket and, for stretches, looked like he finally realized that he has a decided physical advantage over most people that try to guard him. And Goodwin turned in one of the more efficient 24 points that you’ll ever see in college basketball.

After a few games where it looked like he lost his mojo, Ryan Harrow looked, once again, like the guy in full control of the offense. He looked very comfortable, especially when the Cats needed him to help stave off a furious Ole Miss rally. Backcourt mate Julius Mays’s three point shot returned and, as a result, he stretched the defense, giving the Cats more room and better angles to attack the basket. Speaking of which….

Kyle Wiltjer. He’s not going to be a lockdown defender and I don’t think he needs to be for this team to reach its potential. What he has to be, what he must be, is a scorer. And be more than just a spot up jump shooter, Wilter needs to put the ball on the floor and use his size to score and distribute. Against the Rebels, I witnessed two things that I’d never thought I’d see. First, Wiltjer lead a fast break, delivering a spot on pass to Jarrod Polson for the lay up. And secondly, I, along with everyone else watching, saw Kyle Wiltjer put the ball on the deck and slam it home with a two hands. If is offensive game is going to continue to be that diverse, I really like where this team is headed.

One game in January usually doesn’t mean much, unless you take the lessons learned and use them going forward. Every sports team has that one point in the season where they decide to be great, where the players come together and say, “this is what we need to do to win” and then do it. Last year, the Cats turned the corner after the IU loss. In 2011, that team didn’t dig in until the SEC Tournament. So, there’s still time for these Cats to take their games up a notch and make the Ole Miss game their defining moment. So, Cats, show us… show us all what you’re working with.
