Today I look at players from the state that is near and dear to most of our hearts, Kentucky. New head coach Mark Stoops has made it very clear, with the signings of Jason Hatcher, Jacob Hyde, and Ryan Timmons, that he wants the best of the best from the Bluegrass State to stay home and play for the Wildcats. Here is a countdown of the top 10 players who decided to stay in state and play for the University of Kentucky since 1997:

Ohio is important recruiting wise because head coach Mark Stoops was born and raised in Ohio and his dad was a longtime coach at Cardinal Mooney High School in Youngstown. Without further ado, here’s my countdown of those top 10 players:

With the disappointing end to the men’s basketball season, Big Blue Nation has now turned its attention to the football program and hopeful resurgence led by new head coach Mark Stoops. The first look at the team will be in three days at the annual Spring Game. Although the incoming freshman class will not be participating in the scrimmage, Wildcat fans will soon become very familiar with the incoming class and the talent will be centered around three states: Florida, Kentucky, and Ohio. With the current staff that Mark Stoops has it has become clear that these will be the “pipeline” states for many incoming freshman classes to come at Kentucky. So, to pay homage to the future, I decided to take a look back at the past. As a result, I compiled my own list of the top 10 ex-Kentucky Wildcat players to hail from the states of Florida, Kentucky, and Ohio separately since The Air Raid (1997). I will start tonight with my top 10 list for the state of Florida. Check back at the site the next two nights for my other two top 10 lists. Without further ado, here’s my countdown of the top 10 Kentucky Wildcat football players from the state of Florida since 1997:

I was impatiently waiting to see if the Kentucky Wildcats had done enough throughout the season to earn an at-large bid into the NCAA Tournament. I waited, and waited, and waited, and Kentucky’s name never showed up. So I then turned my attention towards the “Last Four In”. Those teams were Boise State, La Salle, Middle Tennessee State, and St. Mary’s. Now, I know that Kentucky’s body of work left alot to be desired this season, but those teams were really the “Last Four In”? I couldn’t believe it just based on the “eye test”, so I decided to do what I always do: look at the numbers. So I decided to compare Kentucky, the “Last Four In”, and Missouri (just to throw another SEC at-large team in there) statistically and here is what I found out:

Heading into the SEC Tournament down in Nashville, the Kentucky Wildcats have something to prove. Are they worthy of a NCAA Tournament bid? Are they the team that beat Florida and Missouri? Are they the team that lost to Georgia and Texas A&M? Most experts have Kentucky on the proverbial “bubble” heading into the SEC Tournament with their NCAA Tournament life resting on their upcoming weekend in Nashville. It got me to thinking about past Kentucky teams that were on the “bubble” heading into Selection Sunday. So I decided to compare, statistically of course, this year’s team with the other “bubble” teams and see how they stack up against each other. For the past teams, the information used is through the SEC Tournament leading up to the NCAA Tournament while this year’s information is just through the regular season leading up to the SEC Tournament. Let’s see how they compare:
