Kentucky Women’s Basketball: Matthew Mitchell Looks to Make a Strong Post-Season Run

The Kentucky Women’s Basketball team capped off the regular season winning 5 of their last 6 games.

Matthew Mitchell looks to have his Kentucky Women’s Basketball team ready to make a run at the SEC Tournament Championship. The Wildcats are led by Seniors Makayla Epps (16.9 PPG) and Evelyn Akhatar (15.3 PPG).

The Kentucky Hoops squad finished the 2016-2017 regular season at No. 20 in the AP Poll. At a record of 20-9 the Wildcats have earned a 4-seed in the SEC Tournament. In addition, Matthew Mitchell’s team set to play their opening game on March 3, 2017. The Wildcats have earned a double-by as a reward for earning the fourth seed.

The SEC Tournament

The SEC Women’s Basketball tournament will be held in Greenville, South Carolina. The games will get rolling beginning Wednesday, March 1.

In other new, the 2017 SEC Tournament Bracket can be found here. As fans fan see, an early semi-final matchup with South Carolina could be a tough feat if the Cats can advance. South Carolina has won the previous two SEC Women’s Championships. On the other hand, Kentucky has only one SEC Championship to it’s name as they took home the title in 1982. Kentucky defeated Tennessee 80-74 in that matchup.

This year’s tournament will be held in Greenville, South Carolina. The host of this year’s tournament is the Bon Secours Wellness Arena.

Kentucky will look to depend on Senior Guard Makayla Epps as the spark to ignite the Cats to a possible SEC Championship. Additionally, Evelyn Akhator as well as Bell County, Kentucky native Maci Morris to chip in for the Wildcats in the scoring column. Morris is averaging 11.8 points per game. Akhator, the 6-foot-3, Nigeria native is averaging a double-double at 15.3 PPG and 10.5 RPG.

The Wildcats will also get aid from Sophomore guard, Taylor Murray. Murray is averaging 12.9 points per game. That makes four Kentucky players averaging double figures. Murray is also second on the team behind Epps, in minutes per game with 34.0.
