Kentucky football has an envious problem at wide receiver: there are too many talented players to choose from. Kayaune Ross may be the most intriguing of them all.

A surplus of depth can be both a positive and a negative in football. Fortunately for the Kentucky football program, the overwhelming number of standouts can be found at wide receiver.

Depth isn’t the only aspect of the wide receiver position that’s overwhelming the coaches in Lexington.

Junior college transfer Kayaune Ross is preparing for his first season with Kentucky. He’s physically gifted, but lacks the necessary polish to receive immediate playing time—or so it seemed.

According to Jon Hale of The Lexington Courier-Journal, head coach Mark Stoops often finds himself wondering how he can justify keeping Ross off the field.

"“After certain scrimmages, after certain practices, we simply said he has to play,” UK head coach Mark Stoops said. “We’ll teach him the rest of it.”"

There’s a surplus of talented targets in the passing game and Ross is one of the most alluring players available.

Standing at 6’6″ and 225 pounds, Ross has the physical gifts to be one of the best wide receivers in the country. He’s raw, but he’s flashed the potential of a true No. 1 wide receiver.

With the proper coaching, Ross can become a legitimate possession receiver who consistently moves the chains.

The upside is clear.

Ross does an excellent job of adjusting his body to make plays on the ball. He still needs to improve the consistency with which he catches passes, as well as his route running, but he has an inherent advantage.

When a wide receiver possesses the type of size and strength that Ross does, quarterbacks can put the ball in their vicinity and see grand results.
