More from Former Cats in the NBA

We are still close to two months away from the 2015 NBA Draft but that does not stop us from guessing where the former Kentucky Wildcats in the NBA may end up.  Over at ESPN, Chad Ford listed his latest mock draft and with this, he actually tried to meet the individual team needs with his scenarios, rather than just blindly list the top players or try to get cute and have certain players go to certain teams for a “better story”.  Keep in mind that we do still not do the draft order, but if the order holds lile it is now, we can expect Karl-Anthony Towns to be the number one pick going to the Minnesota Timberwolves.  Here is Ford’s look at the T-Wolves entire draft and Towns’ possible new team mates.  It’s an interesting way to do a mock draft and see who KAT may be pairing up with.

"Minnesota TimberwolvesNeeds: PF, shootingRound 1 (1) Karl-Anthony Towns, F/C, Fr., KentuckyRound 2 (31) Rashad Vaughn, SG, Fr., UNLVRound 2 (36) Kenneth Smith, PG, Sr., Louisiana TechAnalysis: The Wolves are really stacked with young players, which allows them to be pretty flexible. I’ve been in Towns’ camp for a while, regardless of who gets the No. 1 pick, but I love the fit in Minnesota. His ability to protect the rim and stretch the floor are perfect next to their young core of Andrew Wiggins, Ricky Rubio, Shabazz Muhammad and Gorgui Dieng — and you are talking about the best young core in the NBA. With young players like Zach LaVine, Anthony Bennett and Adreian Payne coming off the bench and vets like Kevin Garnett,Nikola Pekovic and Kevin Martin on the roster, the Wolves could be playoff-bound faster than anyone expects in the West. Vaughn is a value pick at the top of the second round. He’s 18, averaged over 17 PPG as a freshman and can score from the perimeter or at the rim. He gives them a scoring 2-guard who also is big on upside. Smith is one of the best pure distributors in the draft and a nice third-string point guard to put behind Rubio and LaVine."

If this holds up, there is a lot of reasons to be excited if you are a Timberwolves fan.  Ford also ranked his players in the traditional mock draft format and here is where the other Wildcats stack up.

  • 11.  Willie Cauley-Stein (Indiana)
  • 23.  Trey Lyles (Portland)
  • 24.  Devin Booker (Cleveland)
  • 38.  Dakari Johnson  (Detroit)
  • 43.  Andrew Harrison (Indiana)

The one name missing from Ford’s mock draft is Aaron Harrison.  Keep in mind that if Andrew is not drafted in the free agent draft, he can still sign a free agent contract.  It would be interesting to see if Indiana would take a flyer on him to reunite him with Willie Cauley-Stein and his brother.

Of course, it’s all speculation now, but those ping-pong balls will drop soon and that will give us an even better idea of how the draft will shape up.
