John Calipari is just out doing what he does, being an ambassador for the Kentucky program whether he’s on the court or off. Last week he was in the Bahamas coaching a little bit and helping out the camera crew. He helped make sure Jay Bilas’ bald spot got plenty of air time among other things.
As heard on Kentucky Sports Radio earlier today he spent some time on the radio with Mike Francesa. After he got off the air, Francesa hit him with the label that folks have been hitting him with for years. Yep, the X’s and O’s tag.
Check the link in the previous paragraph for the audio of Cal calling back into the show that he just appeared on as a guest. It’s hilarious.
Saying that he was “John from Kentucky” just added to the comedy.
Cal’s always been given credit for his recruiting, his coaching, not so much. At Kentucky he’s always had tons of talent. At UMass and Memphis that wasn’t always the case. Marcus Camby, Derrick Rose and Tyreke Evans are the most notable but he wasn’t loaded year in and year out like he has been at UK.
Obviously it involved being good with X’s and O’s for him to be successful at each place he’s been.
Last year, we remember how he tweaked the offense with Andrew Harrison. Some years he uses more dribble drive than others. Some years he plays more zone than others.
He isn’t even a big fan of zone defense.
Cal was calling to have a little fun. He’s not bothered by anything that is said about him, but it just goes to show that once you receive a label it’s hard to change people’s perceptions.
