Kentucky Wildcats Football: Patrick Towles has a dream

As you wake up this morning with your coffee and browse the internet, the Kentucky Wildcats Football team has probably completed their day.  Practice began bright and early at 6AM today for the first official practice in preparation for the 2014 season.  One of the key battles this year is the quarterback position, which is wide open.  Patrick Towles is rumored to be the leader heading into Fall practice, but that really means nothing right now as the battle has started.  In a way, Towles seems to think the starting job is his dream and destiny.

“I’m from Kentucky. My parents went to Kentucky. My dream for my entire life was to be the starting quarterback at UK,” Towles, a third-year sophomore, said after starting and starring in the Blue-White scrimmage back in April. “I kind of got complacent my freshman year. I’m not going to lie. I didn’t deserve the job. I didn’t deserve the job last year either. But now I feel like I’m doing all right, and I feel like I’ve got a pretty good shot at it.”

According to Neal Brown, Towles has a whole new mindset coming into camp this year as the redshirt year served to help mature him. You don’t have to have a great memory to remember when Patrick Towles was the next big thing coming into Kentucky and was considered the next Tim Couch. Now, he has to compete with “the next big thing” in Drew Barker for the starting job but Towles seems mentally prepared.

“I think he was immature for, really, probably the first several semesters he was on campus. The reality of redshirting last year, I think that was a positive for him,” offensive coordinator Neal Brown said. “He got an understanding that he needed to get better. He was reaching that point in his career where he’d had opportunities to win the job and hadn’t done it, and he knew he was coming up on probably about his last opportunity.

“So I think that made him kind of self-reflect and look inward and figure out that the things that were happening were of his own doing, and he had to correct himself in a lot of areas.”
