When the 2014 PGA Championship officially tees off on August 7, former Kentucky Wildcats golfer J.B. Holmes will be in the field.
Holmes recently participated in the The Open Championship but did not make the cut, shooting 7 over par. This season, he finished in first place with 14 under par at the Wells Fargo Championship. The only other major that Holmes participated in this season was the U.S. Open, where the Wildcat alumnus shot four over par and ties for seventeenth place.
The Long Drive Competition will be at Valhalla on Tuesday, August 5. It will be the first time since 1985 in which the event has coincided with the PGA Championship.
Among the favorites at Valhalla will be Bubba Watson, whose 313.6-yard average drive leads the PGA Tour this year. Dustin Johnson is next at 311.3, followed by Rory McIlroy at 307.5 and Kentuckian J.B. Holmes at 307.1.
Danville native Josh Teater has also qualified for this year’s PGA Championship.
The practice rounds at Valhalla are Tuesday, August 5 and Wednesday, August 6. These are the only two days in which any kind of photography is allowed, be it digital cameras or those on mobile devices. The first two rounds of the championship are on August 7 and August 8. Those players making the cut will compete in the final rounds on Saturday, August 9 and Sunday, August 10.
