Not much the Orlando Magic has done in free agency has made a lot of sense. The Magic have gotten rid of two of their most valuable assets recently in the trading of Aaron Affalo and the dumping of Jameer Nelson. So far, the Magic have not made a splash in free agency, picking up Willie Green off waivers and the curious signing of Ben Gordon to a two-year deal. However, even though it does not make a ton of sense, it makes this Kentucky Wildcats fan happy to know that the Magic are courting Patrick Patterson.

On the surface, this move does not make a lot of sense as Orlando’s one strength is at the PF slot where Aaron Gordon, Tobias Harris, Jason Maxiell, Andrew Nicholson and Kyle O’Quinn under contract. The Magic have been waiving players lately though and Maxiell’s name has been a big rumor.
None of those players can shoot from the outside like Patterson though. Patterson hit 41.1% of his three pointers last year which is a testament to his hard work since leaving UK. Patterson only attempted five three pointers his first two seasons in the NBA and missed them all. Also important is the fact that Patterson could step in and be a leader on this young Magic team.
Patrick is a restricted free agent though which means that Toronto can match any offer. However, Orlando has money to burn and could outbid Toronto if they really want Patterson. The Magic waived Ronnie Price yesterday, and if they waive Maxiell by July 10, those two spots will free up another $4M in salary. By some accounts, Orlando could have close to $30M to spend but may conserve it.
Patrick Patterson is not the main need in Orlando, but his shooting and leadership skills can help to fill some holes.
