ESPN has been counting down the top coaches in NCAA basketball over the past few weeks. John Calipari, who I believe should’ve been and expected to be number one, came in second behind SEC foe, Billy Donovan. Donovan is the coach for the other SEC powerhouse, the Florida Gators.
Coming in second isn’t a bad thing, though. It means he has something he can work for to reach the number one spot, and we all know Calipari likes a push. Somehow, he will overcome second place and reach first, whether ESPN notices it or not.
Calipari has changed the face of the Kentucky Wildcats. When he arrived, the Wildcats were struggling more so than I can recount in recent history. He was handed a disaster and in his first 5 years, he took the Wildcats to the Final Four 3 times. That’s unheard of. That’s what top coaches can do. However, those top coaches would likely be using veteran players, Calipari is not. It’s quite impressive, he never ceases to amaze me, that’s a fact.
So maybe ESPN doesn’t think he is the number one coach, but I’m sure many Wildcat fans sure do. As long as he keeps winning, he’s the best coach the Wildcats could have. I love him, Big Blue Nation loves him, that’s what matters. He’s created a successful program in Lexington, he’s number one in our eyes.
