Jodie Meeks was loved and adored in his time at the University of Kentucky. He was one of the few bright spots of the Billy Gillispie era, pouring in points like no one could. Everyone in the Big Blue Nation new what he could be, but knew he would have to prove himself when he arrived in the NBA. Of course, if he could duplicate his record performance against the Tennessee Volunteers, where he scored 54 points, then he would have no problem at all. Up until this past season, he had been unable to do this. While he was a solid bench player, he was somewhat inconsistent and unreliable. That all changed this past season though.
When Kobe Bryant went down once again this past season, shortly after his return, everyone knew that Jodie Meeks would be called upon to step up. What came next, not many expected. Meeks went throughout the year, performing as the Lakers most consistent player night in and night out, showing that he could score from any where on the court. This couldn’t have been more evident than in his 42 point outburst against the OKC Thunder, where he couldn’t miss if he had tried. This was the icing on the cake for his breakout season, where Meeks averaged 15.7 points on 46.3% shooting (40.1 % from three and 85.7% from free throw). This went along with his 2.5 rebounds, 1.8 assists, and 1.4 steals a night.
All this hard work and effort seems to have paid off finally, as Adrian Wojnarowski has reported Jodie Meeks will sign on with the Detroit Pistons for the next three years, where he will be making ~$6 million a year. This is a major payday for the former Wildcat who just finished up his degree this past May. So Big Blue Nation, stand up and give Meeks his due. He has earned it and so much more.
