2014 NCAA Tournament: Both Wildcats Survive And Advance: Arizona Tops Gonzaga 84-61

A few hours after the conclusion of the #8 Kentucky Wildcats epic win over the #1 Wichita State Shockers, the #1 seeded Arizona Wildcats tipped off against #8 Gonzaga Bulldogs. This time, the 8 seed wasn’t so lucky- the Wildcats defeated the Bulldogs 84-61.

Freshman phenom and one time UK target Aaron Gordon had 18 points, along with teammate Rondae Hollis-Jefferson coming off the bench. Gordon recorded 6 rebounds and 6 assists . Nick Johnson had 17 points as well with 5 rebounds, 5 assists and 3 steals.

The Wildcats forced 21 turnovers (15 steals, 4 by Gordon) and converted that into 31 points.  Six different Arizona players had at least one steal. Arizona only turned the ball over six times. Leading by 21 in the first half, they outscored ‘Zaga by another 10 in the second half.

Gonzaga was led by Przemek Karnowski, who had 14 points, 10 rebounds and 2 blocks. Six Gonzaga players had turnovers and all the starting five had more than one. Kentucky transfer Kyle Wiltjer did not play.

Something else the two Wildcat teams have in common? This is their third trip to the Sweet 16 in four years.

The Wildcats advance to Anaheim to take on  4 seeded San Diego State in Viejas Arena, where they defeated the Aztecs 69-60 in November.
