2014 NCAA Basketball Tournament: North Carolina Tarheels 79, Providence Friars 77


A last second foul won the game for the North Carolina Tarheels against a persistent, determined Providence Friars basketball team. The Tarheels were at the free throw line with 3.5 seconds remaining in the half with a 77-77 tie. The Tarheels escaped with the 79-77 heartbreaking win over the Friars.

The Tarheels were reliant on James Michael McAdoo made one and missed one, to grab his own rebound to put the dagger into the hearts of all Friar fans in the arena and across the the country (including UNC haters.) The free throw gave the Tarheels their first lead of the game since the 58 point mark. Eventually being the reason for coming out of the game with the win.

The number 11 seeded Friars were leading by 8 points with 4:30 minutes remaining in the game, looking like they were going to pull the upset against the number six seeded Tarheels. The Friars senior star, Bryce Cotton had 36 points in the game against the Tarheels, tonight. He was 13-23 tonight, 3 from beyond the three point arc. Cotton and the Friars put up a strong fight against the Tarheels, but came up short in the end.

The Tarheels are now set to take on the winner of the Iowa State-NC Central game on Sunday.
