John Calipari sat down with Kentucky Sports Radio founder Matt Jones yesterday at practice and had some interesting comments in his discussion. A lot of it had to do with this team. Why it did not mesh as quickly as the 2012 team. Why it seemed to buckle under the weight of the lofty 40-0 preseason talks. And how it is finally starting to come together and play as a team. However, after reading through the whole article, there was one thing that stood out to me. That was Coach Cal’s statements on a potential two-and-done rule in the NBA and how it would affect his coaching career here at Kentucky.
My career will be extended if they go to the two-year rule in the NBA. It just will. If that happens it will be crazy down here. My hope is that it goes to two years. It will be better for high school basketball, better for college basketball and better for the NBA. Is it also a little self-serving? Sure, but it will be better for everyone else and the game of basketball too
These quotes mean a lot to Kentucky Wildcat diehards. Anything that will keep Mr. John Calipari on the sidelines of Rupp Arena longer needs to happen. The two are a match made in heaven. But having a two-and-done rule would blow the top off of the college basketball world. Would it hurt Kentucky’s year-to-year recruiting rankings? Sure it would. But could you imagine having players stay for two seasons under Calipari? He would still get his fair share of star players. And they’d be forced to stay in Kentucky blue for two whole seasons.
Having a player with the talent of a John Wall, Demarcus Cousins, Anthony Davis, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, or Julius Randle for one year has proved the Kentucky faithful very well. If they were able to develop for another year, it could be very possible for Kentucky to become a dynasty much like UCLA had back in the day. So Kentucky fans, here’s another thing to keep track of in the NBA. Adding the two-and-done rule watch to the ridiculous number of former Wildcats to keep track of seems very beneficial and logical. Not only would it keep talent here longer, but it would also keep our beloved coach here a little longer too. And for that, we would all be forever grateful!
