It’s gotten to the point where I don’t even try to figure out what the voters are thinking in the NCAA College Basketball polls. I don’t want to sound like a whiner and complain, but the poll voters definitely are biased toward different teams and it breeds all types of inconsistency. I will touch on that in a bit, but here is the latest AP poll where Kentucky fell a whopping seven spots from #11 to #18 after a1-1 week on the road.

Syracuse (65) 21-0 1,625
Arizona 21-1 1,517
Florida 19-2 1,482
Wichita State 23-0 1,447
San Diego State 19-1 1,370
Villanova 19-2 1,252
Cincinnati 21-2 1,182
Kansas 16-5 1,141
Michigan State 19-3 1,136
Michigan 16-5 949
Duke 17-5 940
Creighton 18-3 790
Saint Louis 20-2 728
Louisville 18-4 723
Texas 17-4 719
Iowa State 16-4 717
Iowa 17-5 669
Kentucky 16-5 653
Oklahoma State 16-5 420
Virginia 17-5 364
Oklahoma 17-5 361
Connecticut 17-4 252
Gonzaga 20-3 237
Memphis 16-5 114
Pittsburgh 18-4 110

It’s not really my issue that Kentucky fell but seven spots is a bit extreme. Especially after Duke moved up six spots for beating Pitt and narrowly losing to Syracuse. Granted that type of week would result in maybe holding steady or moving up a spot or two, but not six. And then we come to Kansas. The Jayhawks are solid and a good team but there were handled by Texas and dropped just two spots and are the highest ranked five loss tem in the country.

Conversely, Texas zoomed 10 spots from 25 to 15 for beating the Jayhawks. Seems a bit extreme. A lot of good teams lost last week but the pollsters seemed to have it right with Louisville, who they dropped just two spots. Kentucky should have suffered the same two to three spot drop, not seven.

Things seem a lot more balanced on the coaches poll where Kentucky fell three spots from 11-14. Everything else seemed a lot more normals as well as Kansas fell from 7-9, and Louisville from 7-10. Even the gainers were more in sync with the real world as Duke jumped five spots (even with that loss) and Texas moved back into the rankings at 18.

Here is the USA Today poll:
