Mark Stoops have done a great job building up the best recruiting class the University of Kentucky football program has ever seen, but the offensive line is still in need of some additions in order to prevent massive overhaul in the coming years.
As of now, UK’s projected 2-deep depth chart going into next year consists of five juniors and two seniors. If UK isn’t careful, they’ll have some serious o-line issues in two years if they don’t add some bodies in this class.
With commitments from only two lineman in Jarrett LaRubbio and Nick Richardson, UK desperately needs to add at least one more lineman by singing day.
This class actually got an early start with the commitment of Florida offensive tackle Derrick Kelly. The 6’5″, 280-pound lineman at the time held offers from East Carolina, FIU, and Florida Atlantic.
But after great senior season, Kelly saw his offer sheet pickup, and he now holds an offer from the LSU Tigers and Florida State Seminoles, who are now the perceived favorites after Kelly decommitted several weeks ago.
Yesterday, Stoops may have had his final chance to convince Kelly to re-commit as the two met in an in-hoe recruiting visit.
But the bad news is Kelly hosted LSU for an in-home visit today, and at this points, it looks as though he’s a long-shot to secure a commitment from for Stoops.
There was also some belief the Cats could get Brady Taylor, a 6’4″, 267 pounder out of Columbus, Ohio, to flip his commitment from the Virginia Tech Hokies to UK.
He did in fact flip, but it was to the Ohio State Buckeyes, who were also able to hold off a late surge from UK for the commitment of Marcelyus Jones.
It’s slim pickins at this point, and their best chance at adding an o-lineman is current West Virginia Mountaineers commit Josh Krok, who is rumored to be favoring UK now.
With signing day two weeks away now, the Cats need to add at least one more o-lineman to at least get some depth their going into the next two years.
