Makayla Epps KY Sportsman of the Year Finalist

This year’s Lexington Herald Leader Kentucky Sportsman of the Year may not be a man at all. Kentucky women’s basketball player, Makayla Epps is up for this honor.

This award, voted on by over 100 Kentucky media members considers all athletic accomplishments throughout the year of 2013. The results will be announced simultaneously at the Bluegrass Sports Award Banquet as well as on the Herald Leader’s website, Kentucky.com on January 29. It will also be published the next day in the Herald Leader.

Epps is up against Teddy Bridgewater, quarterback for U of L and Antonio Andrews, running back for WKU (read more on the competition here).  In 2013, aside from becoming a McDonald’s All-American and signing with Kentucky, Epps averaged 22.8 points per game as the guard for the Marion County Knights. She led them to an undefeated state championship season and was Miss Kentucky Basketball.

Ben Roberts of the Herald Leader is one media member with a vote in the matter. He said, “An undefeated season, a Sweet Sixteen championship and she represented the state well at the McDonald’s All-American game in Chicago. A perfect finish to her high school career.”

Epps is currently averaging 11.5 points for UK and 1.8 rebounds.
