The first twenty minutes are in the books in Nashville as UK is leading Vanderbilt by 8 points .
Aaron Harrison leads UK with 8 points while Julius Randle leads with 11 rebounds.
The ‘Cats opened the game playing well defensively, forcing Vandy to shoot 27% (3-11) from the field after the first 8 minutes of the game. However, the ‘Cats weren’t able to take advantage, going 3-10 themselves at the 12 minute media timeout, in route to a 10-6 lead.
Coming back from the timeout, Vandy seemed to seize a bit of momentum, at one point going on a 6-0 lead until Aaron Harrison’s free throws with 7 minutes left in the half put UK ahead 17-12. The ‘Cats closed out the half on a 13-10 run over the last 8 minutes, leading at halftime 30 to 22 over Vanderbilt.
Both Jarrod Polson and Derek Willis saw significant playing time in the first half, with Polson contributing significantly hitting two 3-pointers, the second coming with less than a minute left in the half to give UK a 10-point lead, it’s biggest of the half.
Kentucky forced 7 Vandy turnovers in the half. And though free throw shooting has been a concern, at least in the first 20 minutes the ‘Cats seemed to have figured it out, going 7-8 from the line.
