Kentucky Wildcats Louisville Cardinals: Halftime Analysis

Here is a recap of the first-half of action between the Kentucky Wildcats and the Louisville Cardinals:

*UK ell behind 8-0 early as the Cardinals were asserting themselves and looked to have more energy in the early going. The full-court pressure was really bothering the Cats and led to several turnovers and subsequent easy baskets.

*The momentum shifted temporarily when the Cats went to Julius Randle more. On two-straight possessions, he drew two fouls, hit one free throw, drove in for an emphatic dunk and drove in for another layup.

*All three of those scoring plays came with Randle catching the ball on the wing and driving inside and helped UK go on a 12-2 run.

*UL point guard Chris Jones was the offense for the Cardinals in the first half, scoring 11 of their first 19 points including three made 3-pointers.

*Alex Poythress provided a nice spark off the bench and got an early basket, but two quick fouls led to him being on the bench form most of the half after the 14:14 mark.

*Anytime a UL player went into the paint, Willie-Cauley Stein blocked or altered their shot. They simply couldn’t adjust to him in the paint and settled for a lot of jump-shots.

*Both teams played fairly clean and combined for just seven turnovers through the first 10 minutes.

*This game resembled that of a pair of thoroughbreds racing down the tracks of the Kentucky Derby. Both teams on numerous occasions caught the inbounds pass and raced down to the court to the rim.

*Randle and a hot-shooting James Young carried the Cats through the first-half. Randle finished with 17 points and Young had 11 on 3/13 shooting but got to the free throw line several times and helped get several UL players in foul trouble.
