After Mark Stoops first season at UK there were some huge spots that he knew needed bolstering and places that needed to be filled on the roster as guys have graduated. Stoops has started his work very quickly at filling those on the defensive side of the ball as he grabbed 2 of the nations best JUCO players in Corey Johnson and AJ Stamps have signed with the Cats.
Most likely for both of these players they will be able to come right in and start at their respective positions. For Johnson he will be stepping in at a position that lost 3 players to graduation in Mister Cobble, Donte Rumph and Tristian Johnson. He will be counted on to stop the run at all costs and at 6’3″ 275 pounds he is active enough to get after the quarterback and actually led his team in tackles.
Stamps is also coming into Kentucky at a position that lacks depth, corner is a position that the Cats have struggled with as they have a lot of young players at that position. Stoops hopes that AJ can come in and be a veteran leader to these younger guys who haven’t been lucky enough to have that yet. He’s versatile at the cornerback position as he played wide receiver and cornerback for his junior college. That’s something that DJ Eliot’s defense really needs is a playmaker in the secondary and Stamps looks to be that guy.
