Kentucky Wildcats freshman Julius Randle named to preseason watch list

Kentucky Wildcats freshman Julius Randle was the only SEC player listed when the U.S. Basketball Writers Association announced the 15 players that had been selected to the 2013-14 Oscar Robertson Trophy Preseason Watch List.

The 15 players on the list were chosen by the USBWA board of directors.

Hall of Famer Oscar Robertson will present the award at the Devon Energy College Basketball Awards on April 14, 2014, at the National Cowboy and Western Heritage Museum in Oklahoma City. The Henry Iba Coach of the Year Award and the Integris Wayman Tisdale Freshman of the Year Award will also be presented on the same day at the gala, which is held annually on the Monday following the NCAA Men’s College Basketball Tournament.

Oklahoma State guard Marcus Smart is the USBWA’s preseason selection as the Player of the Year. Even if Randle doesn’t win the Robertson Trophy for Player of the Year, I expect that he will be duking it out with Kansas Jayhawks freshman Andrew Wiggins for the Integris Wayman Tisdale Freshman of the Year Award.

The Tisdale watch list contains 10 players, four of which are attending Kentucky: Randle, guards Aaron and Andrew Harrison, and guard James Young. Given the talent on this Kentucky team, I expect the vote will be split in the end.
