Jalen Whitlow passed for two touchdowns and ran for two more as the Kentucky Wildcats had no problems with the FBS Alabama State Hornets. Whitlow rushed for a 88 yard touchdown on just the second play from scrimmage and had 186 yards passing to go with 101 yards rushing to lead the Wildcats (2-6). Whitlow became the first Wildcat to rush and pass for 2 touchdowns each since Shane Boyd in 2004. The 48 points was the highest point total for UK since they scored 49 on November 6, 2010 versus Charleston Southern.
Freshman JoJo Kemp rushed for 67 yards and a touchdown while fellow freshman Alex Montgomery caught a 6 yard TD pass from Whitlow. For most of the game, Kentucky kept the Hornets in check by having them start in poor field position. The Hornet’s two scores came on long plays: a 32 yard TD run by Isaiah Crowell and a 68 yard reception by Jamel Johnson. Kentucky outgained Alabama State 422-297 and took advantage of two Hornet fumbles.
The win was just what Kentucky needed. They are playing the nation’s fourth toughest schedule and had not won in 56 days. With two wins, Kentucky matches their win total from last year and will close the season with four SEC games. If Kentucky can win one of the remaining games, he will become the first Kentucky first year coach to improve on his predecessors win and SEC win totals since Bear Bryant.
